I want to look at some of the actors who fall in the curious category of being beloved enough, or having an undeniable enough performance, or just being in the right movie at the right time, to be able to win an Oscar on their very first nomination, but then were never able to (or at least in some cases, haven’t yet been able to) duplicate that enough to get another nomination.

    • F. Murray Abraham
    • Jack Albertson
    • Don Ameche
    • George Arliss

Some of the entries on this list are completely fascinating to me. There’s a few names on here that I always forget only have the one nomination, like Abraham, Connelly, Cooper, Douglas, Heston, Irons, Kline, Niven, Robbins, Swinton, and Whitaker.

Which, if any, of the actors on this list still working do you think are most likely to get a second nomination someday? I could easily see ones for Arquette, Berry, Colman, Connelly, Cooper, Irons, Janney, King, Larson, McConaughey, Nyong’o, Rylance, Simmons, Swinton, Vikander, and Whitaker, and don’t think it would be too much of a stretch to see it happening for some of the other names as well.

Every talented performer who received Oscar recognition once does not default into careerist popularity with voters to become a mainstay.

Lionel Barrymore and Tim Robbins were actually nominated for Best Director for Madame X and Dead Man Walking respectively before winning for A Free Soul and Mystic River respectively, but yeah the latter cases were their only acting nominations (so far for Robbins).
