I’m eagerly waiting for the trailer for this supposedly epic space adventure film from James Gray. Curious to see how other people think this will stack up, especially in the technical categories, for this year’s Oscars. Will it pull a “Silence” from a couple years ago and suffer from the early January release curse? OR will this be in its favor?

I really think it will have huge chances in the sound categories, as well as visual effects. But I’m not so sure about music (Even though its score is being helmed by Thomas Newman) because of its late release. Will it even be shown to voters early enough for Newman to make the shortlist now releasing on December 17? Also, it seems as though this year’s cinematography category is pretty tightly packed, it doesn’t seem like there’s room for a lot of other films, however Ad Astra’s camera is helmed by Hoyte van Hoytema, someone who’s been creating beautiful films for years now, only just recently getting a nomination for Dunkirk. Is there room for him? And what about best picture? This could potentially have a Dunkirk-like impact. I guess we will just have to wait for a trailer to find out

I think they might push it to next year.

20th Century Fox doesn’t have it on their 2018 FYC page, so I’m assuming it’s being pushed to 2019.

Interesting, I feel like 20th Century could still change that.

I know this link is kind of old but their initial plan was to have a limited 2018 release to make it eligible, I’m still kind of hoping it is. January film releases never have a chance at the Academy Awards

Guess this is more commercial fare than an Oscar contender (which I think is what most of us suspected). It should still do well in some below the line categories.

Well, if you look at James Gray’s previous efforts it’s hard to define them as “commercial”… If anything, they are too subtle to become Oscar contenders.

This is one I am very excited for. Saying that, I really love the cast.

You’re right. I was mixed up about James Gray because he made Lost City of Z but I got that mixed up with World War Z. Still, with the summer release and Brad Pitt in the lead it does seem like they just want this to make money. The budget is 50 million and its a major studio so its not a tiny little indie.

No. The idea here is to probably premiere at Cannes.

Looking forward to seeing both this and High Life next year. Finally, something interesting happening in space again.

With this and the Tarantino film coming out, 2019/2020 could shape up to be a very good awards season for Brad Pitt. He’s got a pretty unbeatable narrative.

I’d have to disagree with this, I feel as though it could have the same Sci-fi epic appeal as Blade Runner 2049, especially considering Gray is trying to create one of the most visceral visual masterpieces. The reason why it’s being pushed back is probably because they want to spend as much time on the visuals as they can. Plus, with notable composer and cinematographer Thomas Newman and Hoyte van Hoytema in their respective fields in this movie, it shows that it will not simply try and go for a huge commercial success. At that rate, the sound categories are a given. I don’t know though, it may have to fare well at the box office if it is going to get any sort of a chance at major categories at the 2020 Oscars
