Zellweger in “Cold Mountain” is, in my humble opinion, among the all-time worst performances nominated for an Oscar; a grating, one-note turn without a single redeemable quality. Besides Aghdashloo, though, I’m not really a fan of that category. Catherine O’Hara in “A Mighty Wind” wuz robbed.

Zellweger had 3 nominations in a row. They had to give it to her but I do think she’s kind of fun in the film which is sort of dry otherwise.

Viola will become the first black actress to win 2 Oscars and the first one to win lead since Halle and her overrated performance. She’s the only one who can pull it off atm since Mo’nique is pretty much done, Lupita sadly cannot really carry a movie and Octavia is a textbook supporting act

Overall Whoopi had the best performance. She deserved to win everything that year. In fact she should have 2 Oscars for Color Purple and Ghost

You must have not seen Queen of Katwe. It showed that Lupita can definitely carry a movie. Viola has yet to carry a film. She is known forplaying supporting characters in film thus far. Plus Lupita has two big projects coming up. She has “The Killer” remake and “Us” with Jordan Peele.

Whoopi losing is an odd Oscar footnote. Nowadays it seems like how could they have not taken the chance to make history and recognize her performance BUT you have to remember the backlash The Color Purple faced and even the NAACP came out condemning the film. Suddenly in the months between the Globes and the Oscars it began to seem like recognizing the film would actually be an offensive thing to people of color so I think the Academy thought they were doing the “right” thing by not giving her or the film any awards. (Plus Geraldine Page having all those nominations without a win gave them an easy alternative.)

Strange to think how this beloved story was so controversial in its day. Must have been hard for Whoopi to see Halle Berry become the first. Whoopi was the host the night Halle won.

I actually enjoy her in that film. She gave it some spunk.

I’ll take Zellweger over Bradley Cooper in American Hustle any day. I’d rather suffer from food poisoning than watch his hammy what-the-forking-hell-was-that performance.

I wonder if Condola Rashad can get her big break in films, following in Viola Davis’ footsteps. She just received her 4th Tony Award nomination and at the age of 31 which is pretty impressive feat. I saw her in A Doll’s House Part 2 playing Laurie Metcalf’s estranged daughter and her comedic timing nearly stole the show from Metcalf.

Also, sad to see what happened to Monique. I remember watching the TV movie Bessie and Monique had a small but memorable turn there. I did not realize she was such a capable actress and thought Precious was one of those phenomenons where a person just got the perfect role for them and they just got it and a great director guided them through it where everything was in place. I was happy to see I was wrong and that Monique really is an actress.
