    Fernanda Montenegro (Central Station)
    Benicio Del Toro (Traffic)
    Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory)
Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose)
    Rinko Kikuchi (Babel)
    Javier Bardem (Biutiful)

I added Antonio Banderas and took out Bardem in Before Night Falls because the latter is an English-speaking performance.

I’m quite surprised to see so many ranking Marion in TDON above LVER. I loved her in both, but her performance as Piaf is probably my favourite of all time. Totally mesmerising. To be fair, I’m not sure how objective I am as I first watched this movie and her performance at a time when I was particularly vulnerable so it just resonates, as great performances do.

Huppert in Elle a very close second. That Oscar was hers.

I have only seen 4… Banderas, Huppert, Kikuchi and Cotillard (Two Days, One Night)… I’m ashamed, even though I do watch a lot of non-English films.

Anyway, my favourite out of these four is Banderas, followed very closely by Huppert then Cotillard.

I find Kikuchi’s performance very overrated but I don’t know if it’s because her character was very poorly written or because she’s at best average.

    15. Yalitiza Aparico, Roma (she had no business being nominated in my opinion)
