Let us imagine an alternate timeline as a means of exploring Oscars history.

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS JUST ONE WAY THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED. THIS IS SCENE-SETTING, AND NOT TO BE TAKEN AS A LITERAL PREDICTION FOR THIS NON-EXISTENT TIMELINE.

The 72nd Academy Awards have been. While a successful presentation, in this alternate timeline, dissent grew from groups highlighting the many stunning films that missed Best Picture.

Where was The Talented Mr. Ripley/Being John Malkovich, which narrowly missed and are now regarded as classics? Where is The Matrix, a film that moved forward film-making as an artform as well as rethinking technology and questioning identity in a way that would age very well? All About My Mother was widely praised, but it missed Best Picture?

In this hypothetical scenario, similar to The Dark Knight/WALL-E in our timeline, public reaction to these resulted in the Academy making a big change to signal a new millennium for cinema.

The 73rd Academy Awards are now not only notable for Gladiator, but also a 10 film Best Picture slot that would continue for the remaining years.

WHAT FILMS ARE NOW NOMINATED FOR BEST PICTURE THAT WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN BEFORE? WHAT CLAIMS THOSE EXTRA SLOTS?

Billy Elliot was definitely 6th. It got in director, and it was nominated at all relevant precursors – PGA, BAFTA, GG and SAG ensemble.
Almost Famous won Comedy Globe, and also got in at all of the big precursors.
Wonder Boys got in Editing and Screenplay, and had been nominated at the Globes

It would probably be those eight nominees for BP that particular year.

    73rd Oscars:

This is the year it all changes. The Academy awaits the awards nominees with bated breath. What would the new future bring?

As it turns out, this year was not a real boundary-breaker in the films that got in in addition. Crouching Tiger got nominated in our timeline anyway, though in this timeline it might have received credit as an upside the 10 film nominees.

Bolded are the entries from the new timeline. Italics for winner.

    • Almost Famous
    • Billy Elliot
    • Chocolat
    • Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
    • Erin Brokovich
    • Gladiator
    • O Brother, Where Art Thou?
    • Pollock
    • Traffic
    • Wonder Boys

Billy Elliot is the sixth place likely – per Director nominee. Almost Famous is not far behind, and O Brother had momentum from the soundtrack and directors. Wonder Boys got Screenplay and editing, so BP could have happened in this timeline. Pollock got in for performance category strength. If this was flex 5-10, it wouldn’t get in Best Picture. I considered Quills as a contender, but I think that would be too much for the Academy now let alone in 00. I also considered Chicken Run, but that got no nominees.

2000 would’ve been seen as a relatively unexciting year for nominees, and arguments would’ve occurred that the new 10 nominees were too much. However, 2001 would be a year where the 10 nominees would take the system down some weird and elightening roads…

“Catch Me If You Can” in 2002.

That s still my favorite Amy Adams perf, over The Fighter and Junebug. And Leo’s. I suspect he was a victim of slap the stud-ism. Also one of my fave Spielberg movies.
MVP is a tough choice. Gotta go with Leo. He’s amazing.

The 74th Academy Awards would present a far greater divergence in nominations than the 75th. In this year, exciting new possibilities were just off the fringe of the 5 nominees.

    • A Beautiful Mind
    • Amélie
    • Black Hawk Down
    • Gosford Park
    • In The Bedroom
    • Iris
    • The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
    • Moulin Rouge
    • Mulholland Drive
    • Shrek

Black Hawk Down and Iris are easy to explain with traditional Academy logic. The former has a Best Director nomination, a litany of technical nominations, and a screenplay. That’s easy to slide with the Dunkirk/Mad Max Fury Road model of tech/director focused action Best Picture nominees. Iris is a performance magnet biopic.

“Hold up” you might say. Amélie didn’t even win Best Foreign Language Film, so why would it get nominated in Best Picture? Well, that is due to widespread cross-branch support that helps a lot come nominee day. It had as many nominations as In The Bedroom and that is WITHOUT a deserved Actress nomination.

“Shrek, really?”. Check the BAFTA nominees for my answer to that.

“Mulholland Drive was literally only nominated in one other category”. But that was Director, and that film had a vocal fanbase that would help it get to a slim margin nominee.
