The American Film Institute will announce their Top 10 films this Sunday.

Any guesses or predictions for 2011?

The usual note – these are supposed to be only American films, but they have a broad definition (any noticeable American involvement qualifies; but Slumdog Millionaire, The King’s Speech are two that couldn’t be rationalized, as definitely Shame and We Need to Talk About Kevin aren’t, and almost certainly not Harry Potter). The Artist shouldn’t be, but I assume the Weinsteins have lobbied like crazy to make sure it is in.

And they almost always have a comedy film included, so for that I say Bridesmaids is in.

Why isn’t Harry Potter eligible? It’s financed by an American studio, should that not make it eligible?

^^^True. That means it’ll probably make the list.

    My new list:
    Bridesmaids
    The Descendants
    Drive
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-Part 2
    The Help
    Hugo

Good on Bridesmaids; special awards went to The Artist and Harry Potter (career achievement?).  Tinker Tailor ineligible (UK).  AFI seems to have a good strategy; keep the silent movie out of the competition while giving it a special award, which it should be limited to anyway.

I believe the AFI considered “The Artist” French rather than American so they could not put it in their top ten. They liked it so much though they wanted to honor it. That makes me believe the voters may have liked it more than anything in their top ten since they felt the need to single it out.

Dragon Tattoo was a possibility, but can all these organizations stop it with their Clint hard-on?  He peaked with Changeling and everything he’s done since has been downright middling.

I thought for sure that an animated film would get in but this turned out to be a pretty lazy list (J. Edgar).  I am happy to see they went for The Tree of Life though.
