The American Film Institute (AFI) Awards 2013 honoring the best ten movies of the year, will be announced today, December 9th. The private awards luncheon will be held on January 10, 2014, where awards will be given.

My predictions: Lots of films competing this year, including a whole bunch of Indie films. And lets not forget the Foreign Language films of 2013. Very difficult to make a list, who gets in, who gets snubbed?

    1. Captain Phillips
    2. Gravity
    3. 12 Years A Slave
    4. Her
    5. American Hustle
    6. Inside Llewyn Davis
    7. Nebraska
    8. Blue is The Warmest Color
    9. The Wind Rises
    10. Blue Jasmine

They do only put American Films on the list. They also did a Special achievement award for the King’s Speech the year before for the same reason.

I think that the list will be:
    12 Years a Slave
    American Hustle
    Blue Jasmine
    Captain Philllips
    Fruitvale Station
    Gravity
    Her
    Inside Llewyn Davis
    Saving Mr. Banks
The Wolf of Wall Street (If they’ve had time to see it)

The Hobbit is a New Zealand film, not American
Blue Jasmine, Capt Phillips, Butler, AOC, Frozen among those not included

Edit: Is that the list, or your predictions?

Not Leonardo, but those have to be predictions. No list on their website yet or reported by anyone yet.

Right! My predix… I had a feeling that THE HOBBIT was eligible, but then take it out and put BEFORE MIDNIGHT instead…

Since some US money was involved, they might consider it American, although that would be another example of our knee-jerk assumption that anything in English must be American

Great Gatsby is an Australian film as another example

I do not know if the “Hobbit” series is more New Zealand-centric than the “Lord of the Rings” films but “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” won  best picture from the AFI the one year they did a competitive award rather than just issuing a top ten list.

I was thinking that might have been the case – LotR had I believe a bit more US financing than The Hobbit films, but its selection was dubious since again essentially in its creative elements and its filming it was nearly all Kiwi

My post was a reaction to thinking it was a done deal, as opposed to the legitimacy of predicting it

The King’s Speech, with they did separate from the American list, had some American production elements (the Weinsteins)

So Blue Jasmine, The Butler, AOC (no surprise) and all animated left out
    Also no docs

That could be the list from which the BP nominees comes from – most likely there will be 9, so which one gets left off?
Or can Blue Jasmine get in? (I think it might)
