with no acknowledgement for saoirse (seeing how she is barely getting mentions)

But who else is a Supporting Actress contender? I can only think of Close, Colman, Seyfried, and Breslin. Maybe Viola if she frauds again, but I doubt that happens. That category is so barren. And Ronan has gotten into much more competitive acting races before (like last year’s Best Actress race).

I see your argument but last year’s Best Actress race wasn’t competitive af 💀 She was definitely a lock even with the SAG snub.

with a stronger and more accessible movie that literally smashed at the box office…. bad example (it wasn’t even that competitive anyway, please.)

i just don’t see oscars acknowledging this when not even critics like it and it’s clearly less accessible then ronan’s previous efforts.

With this underperforming, I wouldn’t be surprised if Mank got two supporting actresses in due to lack of competition. I won’t take out Ronan yet, but it really does seems like Ammonite is going nowhere.

I’d bet on Winslet before Ronan for a nomination, least Winslet won/almost got duo noms for movies with similar RT%, and we know Winslet + Neon have their checkbooks out written to GG + CC for a nomination and will add some 0’s to the amount needed to keep her name afloat.

https://twitter.com/VanityFair/status/1304136193408479233 looks like Kate Winslet’s shameless oscar campaign has begun!

God, she is horrible. I always forget she is the thirstiest!

I love it 😀 Freaking hilarious because it’s just so predictable (especially since this will not go anywhere)

Hmmm the reviews are mixed for sure about the movie and the performances. If the romance in the movie does not spark, it is both a directional error and a low chemistry between the actresses. That is my opinion.

It is too bad though because Ronan is my favorite younger actress along with Mara.

When I saw Carol, Portrait of a Lady and The Handmaiden, the spark was most def there.

But I have not seen the movie yet

Maybe this will make it easier for Close to get her Oscar in supporting?

I read somewhere that the characters are much younger than the original once. Maybe casting older actresses would have made the movie a different and better when it comes to chemistry?

Fiona Show as Mary and Kristin Scott Thomas as Charlotte sounds really great to me 🙂

Winslet may still happen as a fifth spot (and still I doubt it, since the competition is strong and packed), but Ronan and Lee are out for good.

The exaggerations that this movie is done already, too funny. People are forgetting how recently movies with mixed reviews still did well with the Academy because of strong performances and/or star power. The raves I’ve read so far single out both stars.

People also seem to forget the Academy appreciates actors trying something different. Ronan is still in a good position I reckon considering she isn’t just “in another literary adaptation”. Corset Kate hasn’t been nominated since the 90s and is getting raves. Ronan has been building goodwill in the Best Actress category, regardless of how this movie is received down the line it will be much easier for her to get into supporting especially in a weak year.

To summarise, people here are being way too premature I reckon. Of course my views might change when I’ve seen the movie but that’s my logical take on why the pair shouldn’t be written off yet.

    FYC:

Antonio Banderas and Asier Etxeandia, Dolor y Gloria (Best Actor/Supporting Actor)
Emily Beecham, Little Joe (Best Actress)
Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren, The Good Liar (Best Actor/Actress)

    Apart from 2002, 2005, 2007, 2016 and her win in 2009.

This film hasn’t done well critically but I think it’s delusional to say Roman is done for good considering how many times recently she’s been nominated and how she’s being singled out in reviews with Winslet. She might not happen but considering how weak this field is to rule her out would be premature.

What we can say though is she won’t be winning.

FYC OSCARS : VANESSA KIRBY FOR "PIECES OF A WOMAN", GLENN CLOSE FOR "HILLBILLY ELEGY", ANTHONY HOPKINS FOR "THE FATHER", CHADWICK BOSEMAN FOR "MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM", PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN (BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY).

The other times she managed to get the nomination because she was backed by a film strong enough to be a critically acclaimed BP contender, in the case of Little Women it also did good money at the box office.

This is different, it’s not the case this time around.
It’s not an acclaimed Greta Gerwig film, nor its raved like Brooklyn.

It’s just a small under the radar indie which seems to be a bad rip-off of Carol and POALOF.

    She won’t happen this year.

Those movies you’re refering to, had either a socially relevant message, a smash box office hit, a prestigious Golden Lion or a unique approach to a very dark time in human history. Ammonite has non of this. I don’t remember the last time a movie such as Ammonite managed to get Oscar nominations across the board with such a mediocre response from critics.
