Watch them do shortlists to limit what gets nominated. LOL. BAFTA rules, here we come.

ReplyCopy URLThe Academy’s e-mail carries a hefty price tag for a self-funded campaign, charging $2,000 per blast to the entire Academy membership. A studio can only purchase one e-mail blast per week. Variety can also confirm that “To Leslie” sent at least three e-mail blasts sent to AMPAS voters, which would have been purchased by Momentum Pictures or Riseborough’s campaign team, including Narrative PR and Shelter PR.
January 28, 2023 at 1:00 am #1205271980This reminds me of that song from the movie “Alone Yet Not Alone” that got its nomination rescinded for similar reasons.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 28, 2023 at 1:11 am #1205271986If the Academy inquiry goes as far as rescinding Riseborough’s nomination, a reminder that according to Academy rules, there would be no replacement nominee (i.e., the sixth-place finisher moving up to fifth place). The category would just have four nominees instead.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 28, 2023 at 1:23 am #1205271997To be quite honest, all this situation has done has exposed the elitism and hypocrisy that appears inherent in the business.
Every other contender this season has had the benefit of multi-million dollar campaigns promoting their performances. Blanchett, Yeoh, de Armas, Davis, Deadwyler, Robbie have been on the campaign trail and received countless mentions on Twitter etc from their celebrity friends hailing their work, for almost the entirety of 2022. Every other day you checked Twitter you saw celebrities promoting their work.
But when a relatively unknown actress is nominated without any of this financial promotion it’s a problem that warrants investigation…the status quo threatened.
Riseborough’s nomination is an unprecedented victory for independent cinema against the corporate machine giants of major film studios, and their stranglehold over every awards race.
Sometimes the payola doesn’t pay off.
My ballot this year would have been:1. Zar Amir Ebrahimi
2. Ana de Armas
3. Michelle Yeoh
4. Andrea Riseborough
5. Danielle Deadwyler (I wouldn’t even bother putting Blanchett as she was the strongest position)ReplyCopy URLFYC:

Ana de Armas, Julianne Nicholson - Blonde (Best Actress, Supporting Actress)

THIS! You’d think industry people would to try and discredit the grassroots efforts from Riseborough because it threatens their usual tactics… but what’s most disheartening is those from here/film twitter who would clearly prefer studio interference and are now trying to scapegoat Riseborough, but in the same breath will say things like “why don’t the Academy ever make inspired choices???”… The double standards are confusing.

Her performance was nothing groundbreaking. Not sure how a GOOP endorsed campaign is a triumph for independent cinema. Riseborough only succeeded because of her industry connections. This is nothing to celebrate.

How is it an “inspired choice” if it was essentially paid for or forced to committee members? Making inspired choices is nominating something regardless of silly campaigns or spammed emails. Andrea’s nomination was anything but. And those emails and tweets don’t even mention anything about actually watching To Leslie.

Well, then. There’s no such thing as an “inspired choice.”

if someone is trying to pay you millions and you decide to go with another one who is paying you just thousands that comes from passion and is inspired

Darling, I love you… this is exactly what I had in mind. The hypocrisy across the board is nauseating.
