It’s impossible to quit the theatrical release requirement. Some Oscar voters already tried that and totally failed. See The DGA. All Directors in Hollywood prefer theatrical release over Streaming. It’s just that the whole World changed and Streamers are more successful now. But powerful people like Cameron, Spielberg, Tarantino and Nolan still hate Streaming and Streamers
And with all reason: they are filmmakers and as filmmakers they want their audiences to have the best experience they can have when watching their films, and those best experiences are by far provided by movie theaters, not home streaming.

Babe, you’d think these voters had guns held to their heads

Why are people so stupid? And being extra stupid to give an interview and say THAT?
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 30, 2023 at 1:47 pm #1205275061Here’s one solution; Riseborough stays in lead actress, but throw Frances Fisher under the bus. She is an Oscar voter. She talked up Riseborough in public during the final week of voting. Fisher said, don’t sweat Deadwyler and Davis; they’re already in, so you don’t have to vote them #1 on your ballot.
That’s illegal. And she should be kicked out of the Academy for it.

The less blood spilled the better imo.
Frances has some impressive connections. I’m not defending her but going after her will turn into a bigger mess.
I have very mixed feelings about all of this but my sympathies lie with the nominees left standing.ReplyCopy URLThe Sunne in Splendour.
I prefer my roses whiteJanuary 30, 2023 at 2:13 pm #1205275092Nothing will happen. Harvey Weinstein did it way worse and The Oscars never investigated his weird and against the rules campaigns

“Can you imagine if Viola [Davis] was being accused of what her [Andrea Riseborough] team is being accused of? Viola wouldn’t have gotten to the point of getting nominated. She would have already been disqualified and probably kicked out of the Academy. There’s always one set of rules for one group and one set for another. Or should I say, one set for Black people? We see this all the time, and the Academy knows it. Yet, they chose not to do anything about it… so do I think she’ll be kicked out? Hell no! Because ‘White is Always Right.’ She’ll probably even win because the system is made for people like her to thrive. To succeed. To flourish. For Black people, there is no system. We aren’t flourishing. But I’ll wait to see what they’ll do.”

Im not saying there isn’t, I’m just wondering if there is a rule that says people can’t say stuff like that. Because Frances Fisher was acting as a private individual so unless there is, she can say whatever she wants about how people should vote.

January 31, 2023 at 6:43 am #1205275766Bullshit. Will Smith & Kevin Spacey kept their Oscars, and the former after a violent attack! Riseborough did nothing! If there were questionable actions OTHERS did, hold them accountable. Facts are the facts….she got the required # of votes in first place for a nomination. Sorry, but I’ve said it all season. Viola Davis in TWK is not going to garner a lot of #1 votes, top 5, maybe, but not #1. Deadwyler was shocking, but again, I championed for Woodard in 2019 and she only made BAFTA the next year, so it’s a gamble.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 31, 2023 at 9:58 am #1205276055I think at the very least, it will lead to updated rules on campaigns and what they can say. To me, it’s not that they said “Hey, remember Andrea and vote for her!”, it’s that they specifically said “Hey, these others are safe, vote for Andrea as #1”. There is a big difference between those two. Someone asked why Frances didn’t campaign for actresses of color and she said please see my post about Charmaine Bingwa in Emancipation. She did post about her, but not the vote this way like she did for Riseborough. Christina Ricci saying at first that the “investigation” into this was “elitist” made me chuckle because I felt that calling that elitist was elitist, but that’s just me.
I do want to see the movie and I’m sure she does a great job. I hear words like real and authentic. I know lots of southern, poor, troubled women (I’m from the south, I know lots of southern, poor, troubled men as well) so hopeful it rings true, along with her accent.

Frances, was stoopid wording things the way she did. Alas, she can’t take it back.
From what I could gather that was actually Frances who posted in here. That’s quite telling. She didn’t sound remorseful at all, but misunderstood.
Uh huh.
Think you’ll enjoy Riseborough’s exhausting perf Bama….ReplyCopy URLThe Sunne in Splendour.
