Riseborough stays put. Academy CEO Bill Kramer’s full statement below:
Based on concerns that surfaced last week around the TO LESLIE awards campaign, the Academy began a review into the film’s campaigning tactics. The Academy has determined the activity in question does not rise to the level that the film’s nomination should be rescinded. However, we did discover social media and outreach campaigning tactics that caused concern. These tactics are being addressed with the responsible parties directly.
The purpose of the Academy’s campaign regulations is to ensure a fair and ethical awards process—these are core values of the Academy. Given this review, it is apparent that components of the regulations must be clarified to help create a better framework for respectful, inclusive, and unbiased campaigning. These changes will be made after this awards cycle and will be shared with our membership. The Academy strives to create an environment where votes are based solely on the artistic and technical merits of the eligible films and achievements.

Where were these loud supporters when her performance premiered at SXSW in March 2022? or when the film had its theatrical release in October 2022? ain’t nothing grassroots about you “friends” waiting to promote your film until Oscar voting opens, they couldve been doing that all year long. You want a word of mouth campaign? Look no further than DRIVE MY CAR’s critic’s push last awards season.

Let’s be honest if Andrea Riseborough was a Black woman, this would not even reach to the point of having a discussion of whether her nomination should be revoked or not, she would be declared ineligible during the voting period.
OR since the Academy loves to embarrassed Black women and refuses to award another Black woman in the Best Actress category after Halle Berry, the nomination would have been immediately revoked.
Please note, I am not saying Riseborough deserved her nomination rescinded, but the system always works in favor for certain groups of people, at the detriment of others.

No & no. Andrea is keeping her nomination. However, The Academy still implied that the “campaign” went too far & they’re changing rules for future races. Also, the last time an actress won as a sole nominee for their film was Julianne Moore in Still Alice. I highly doubt a movie as small as To Leslie could pull off that feat. Even with the controversy.

Cause they banned Will Smith for 10 years…

ReplyCopy URLJanuary 31, 2023 at 4:49 pm #1205278754Lets be real, the issue is not Riseborough sneaking in but two black actresses got snubbed. if Riseborough came in at the expense of Williams and De Armas none of the Riseborough hate would have come. Riseborough did what no one thought and sneaking in, she had no control over what Paulson and Fisher did. Why the debate is always painted Riseborough as the devil that has to be hated at all cost
With that said, f*ck Frances Fisher.

You cannot be so sure that this would happen. There’s no precedent. I don’t think that any actor, regardless of race, would get their nomination rescinded unless there was undeniable evidence of wrongdoing considering their stature. It just wouldn’t look good on the Academy.

There was a lot more to it. There was spamming from her manager, who broke the rules on multiple occasions.

The irony. If Lady Gaga pulled this astroturf Andrea route to a nomination, I’m guessing you’d have a much different take.

February 1, 2023 at 10:54 am #1205279693Regardless of controversy, if too many emails is the breaking point for an organization to ban/rescind people’s nominations but studio’s hosted expensive dinners/parties, paid FYC screenings, and under the table offers are all acceptable, its embarrassing for anyone to take any organization seriously if the nomination was actually rescinded. Doesn’t mean the organization shouldn’t update the rules if they weren’t being followed. Let’s not pretend the studios only performed shady bribery on GG voters (for decades) but not Oscar voters, when an Oscar nom is going to carry way more weight than a fucking GG nomination for anyone’s career.
