Lets be real. The two afro-american actresses split their votes. Therefore none got in.
Besides, as TOM always says, what it counts how many people is crazy for your performance, not that it is liked by more people. I have no problem with A being nominated, but i want B to be nominated no matter what.
Here is where Ms Fisher was wrong. You cant say the other are safe… it is misleading people… but on the other hand, if they changed their vote towards Andrea, it means that they werent so apasionated about the other performances.

Only if she can take another swipe at the mods for allowing freedom of speech.

I prefer my roses whiteFebruary 1, 2023 at 11:35 am #1205279775The whole drama has been ridiculous. I can understand that a lot of people are disappointed that their favorites have been snubbed (I personally would love to see Danielle Deadwyler being nominated) , but it’s not like someone bribed or killed somebody. It all boils down to a tweet from an actress I have never heard of, and maybe mentioning a competitor in a FYC campaign. This vs. millions of dollars spent by studios for promotions. Do you really think that voters were more influenced by that last minute unconventional campaign than by those millions worth campaigns?
I think many voters supported Riseborough, because they did want a surprise in an predictable, money based voting process, where small movies are at huge disadvantage from the very beginning.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 1, 2023 at 11:46 am #1205279798What I think is amazing is how much people think her tweet influenced the branch. Like, people, seriously, you think that her tweet is what got Andrea the nom? If Frances Fisher has that power then I wanna know what Jane Fonda or Meryl Streep could do. I mean be fucking for real. Riseborough got in because actors were inundated with emails, friends hosted screenings, and MULTIPLE people took to social media to voice their admiration. Fran’s tweet did not cause Deadwyler and Davis to miss 💀

February 1, 2023 at 11:59 am #1205279816I mean strategically speaking, if u want specifically 1 person to get a nomination, it makes no sense to put on your ballot their closest competition. If the nomination goes by how often someone shows up on a ballot, then obviously nobody is gonna put on their ballot their closest competitors so their personal #1 has an easier time of winning the eventual Oscar. If it goes by how often someone gets #1 votes, then it’s the same, ud vote for ur #1 and have 4 throwaway contenders to have weaker competition for ur fave and not put on the ballot your closest competitor. I assume that could’ve been the case for Andrea where other passionate voters for other contenders with the same mentality all slotting in Andrea somewhere in their ballot over the some of the others (Danielle/Viola/Michelle’s/etc) assuming she’s going to be a throwaway but at least not a vote for the competition to get in and eventually she showed up on a lot of #1 when/if some of their personal #1 fell out and became a #1 vote for Andrea and then her name showed up on more ballots with the original #1 passionate Andrea voters eventually leading to an actual nomination. I don’t think most voters vote like this but I assume that’s exactly how some including the Frances Fischer and the #1 Andrea voters probably casted their ballot and I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them purposely left off the other 4 eventual nominees, assuming others got the others covered, which she kind of hinted at.

Well, Frances was in Unforgiven for a reason. She didn’t audition for it.
However I mostly agree with your points (and others)

February 1, 2023 at 2:00 pm #1205280018The irony. If Lady Gaga pulled this astroturf Andrea route to a nomination, I’m guessing you’d have a much different take.
She will always have the millions to back up her obnoxious and loathsome campaigns. Money is not a problem as we have seen two times. And I doubt many A-listers will rush to Twitter to post that kind of messages for her.

Yes, people can be very reactive in these situations. That’s risky.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 1, 2023 at 3:58 pm #1205280132So…how would y’all feel if Riseborough wins?
Early “cemented” Blanchett looks vulnerable to me now.
Still time for momentum to suddenly go haywire. Happens a lot.I hope Andrea takes votes away from Cate, possibly allowing a much deserved Michelle Yeoh win.

Don’t ask me the logic of it but I feel who would’ve voted for Yeoh will now vote for Riseborough. I don’t know how any of you still have faith in this racist industry. I recall a conversation that happened around the mid-2010s when ratings were declining and reached a new low with The Shape of Water and then the pandemic happened and they became abysmal so there were some articles about how the future of the ceremony might’ve been in jeopardy and even the Academy itself. And concluding that very little has changed and controversies keep surrounding it while they’re about to reach the 100 years old mark, I think it would not be a bad idea to end an institution that keeps on mainting some of the worst traits the industry has to offer.

#AvatarTheWayOfWater is a small film with a giant heart. Sam Worthington gives the performance of the year, and Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, and Edie Falco are all incredible. Please go find this gem, directed by James Cameron!
