I wanted to create a thread dedicated to one of the most talented actresses of all time. I cannot believe that she has had only 1 Oscar nomination throughout her entire career. In my opinion, she should have won the Oscar for “What’s Love Got To Do With It.” That was one of the greatest performances in cinema history. She also gave a very powerful performance in Waiting to Exhale. Angela is known for playing real life women, and she is also known for her fictional roles in films such as How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Vampire in Brooklyn, and the TV series, American Horror Story.

I hope and pray that one day, she gets another Oscar nomination. She truly deserves another one.

What do you guys think of Bassett? Do you feel she should have won the Oscar? Do you feel that she has been snubbed?

Hunter’s performance, movie, and momentum were too great for newcomer Bassett to overcome. I think her 1995 trio of movies: Vampire in Brooklyn, Strange Days, and Waiting to Exhale represent an artistic peak for her.

If only What’s Love Got to Do with It had garnered a ’94 release, Bassett would’ve prevailed in a cakewalk. I think she’s Oscar-caliber in Waiting to Exhale too, though not sure she’d crack my top 5 in the embarrassment of riches that was ’95 Best Actress.

95 was such a touch year for actresses. I can understand her being left out.

Guess it was really one of the best examples of “bad luck” years. I wonder which one of The Piano or What’s Love Got to Do with It is considered to be the one that holds up better today? Wasn’t there some negative press about the fictionalized and dramatized stuff of Tina’s life?

They should’ve gone to a witch, fortune teller or something to get anvanced word about the 94 race. Basset would’ve easily won that year. (Which of course would’ve influenced Berry’s win 8 years later. That might not have happened).

She’s incredible as Tina, plus her physical transformation. But have you seen The Piano? I suppose many haven’t. That’s Holly Hunter’s Oscar. And she was popular enough to get a second shitty nomination that same year. And Hunter’s film had many other nomination, screenplay win, a supporting actress win and the second female director ever nominated. That should tell you a lot about Basset’s (or anybody else’s) chances.

I remember there was a controversy after Halle Berry won. Bassett said that she turned down the role because it was about a black woman needing a white man to save her or something like that.

It got her a lot of bad press about her being bitter that Halle became the first person to break the color barrier and not her.

The producers of Monster’s Ball firmly denied that she was their first choice.

To me the odd thing about What’s Love…is how she got so muscular for it and how much press that got. Tina Turner was never ripped. (and plus she didn’t do her own singing.) It sort of seems like to win for a biopic singer you got to do the singing (Jamie Foxx, Reese Witherspoon, he didn’t win but Gary Busey got kind of a surprise nomination for his Buddy Holly singing.)

Getting off on a tangent here but I always wonder why the director of Sweet Dreams reneged on his promise to Streep to give her the role. Streep was going to sing it (to say nothing of Beverly D’Angelo who initially was told she’d get it.)

Interesting, I could have easily swapped her for Sharon Stone if I’m not mistaken about the year.
