The issue of ignoring the animation genre is one that needs to be tackled. The Academy Awards is running to its 92nd year and only three animated feature films has received best picture nominations when lots of the are nomination (even win in some cases) worthy. This decade alone saw lots of great animated films that 100% deserved to be nominated.

Here’s my list. There are many others, but these are the ones in my head right now.

    Inside Out

    Zootopia

    Moana

    Coco

    Spiderman into the spider verse

    The tale of Princess Kaguya

    Kubo and the two Strings

    How to Train your Dragon

    Wreck-it Ralph

    Brave

How to Train your Dragon 2

    FYC:

Chromatica: Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album.

Rain On Me: Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Music Video.

    Alice: Best Pop Solo Performance

    Rango
How To Train Your Dragon 2
    Inside Out
    Kubo and the Two Strings
    Zootopia
    Coco
    Incredibles 2
    Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
    Toy Story 4

May the best of your todays be the worst of your tomorrows.

Those three are really good ones though

I say Wreck-It Ralph and Inside Out deserved to be nominated.

I just love movies. And awards.

    Ponyo Miyazaki
Kubo and The Two Strings Travis Knight
    Ratatouille Brad Bird

    Isle of Dogs Wes Anderson
    Inside Out Peter Docter
    Wall-E Andrew Stanton
    A Cat In Paris Gagnol/Felicioli
The Fantastic Mr Fox Wes Anderson
    Up! Docter

There’s others like boxtrolls and Secret of the Kells and any of the Toy Stories The Red Turtles and yes I know I’m cheating.

The Academy doesn’t take its own Animated film category seriously. It is embarrassing to even take a look at the nominees, year after year. Animation is not regarded as a art form but as a distraction parents use to keep kids busy. When the voting body doesn’t understand what animation can do, they aren’t going to nominate animations for best picture.

Admittedly, the last few years have seen a slight improvement.

    Zootopia
    Rango
    Isle of Dogs

Not from this decade but these should have been nominated too:

    The Princess and the Frog
    WALL-E
    Coraline
    Ratatouille
    Monsters Inc.

    SPIRITED AWAY

edit: sorry I saw it said decade, but this is one of the best animated films ever.

I would have switched out Isle of Dogs or Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse for Bohemian Rhaspody any day.

I agree with a lot of the films listed here. There have been many occasions in which an animated film shouldn’t have just been nominated, but should’ve won Best Picture. Quite a few should’ve been nominated and should’ve won for screenplay as well. I could also go for a voice acting category. Not divided by gender or anything. Just nominate five or so voice over performances. This could have been a place to even award motion capture performances.

I totally agree and I was thinking about it too. Voice works isn’t easy and so should be celebrated. That category will make more sense than the intended Popular Film category

    FYC:

Chromatica: Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album.

Rain On Me: Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Music Video.

    Alice: Best Pop Solo Performance

Into the Spider-Verse probably would’ve been nominated if the BP voting system was still the 2009-2010 methodology instead of the current system.

Inside Out, Zootopia, Coco – all highly deserving, especially with 10 spots available. The first one should have won Best Original Screenplay, the latter two should have been nominated there.
