Let it begin! IMO one of the most exciting parts of an Oscar season 🙂

Penelope Cruz is undeniable in that performance. She’s an actress who gets better and better with age; she brings her entire life to every performance.

    FYC:

"The Good Fight", "The Other Two" and "Station Eleven" in all categories, Sarah Lancashire ("Julia"), William Jackson Harper ("Love Life") and Luke Kirby ("The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel")

I have Chastain in second for objectivity of the race since that SAG win was undeniably beneficial, but Cruz seems very much like a passion vote to me. People bring up her missing nominations at every other precursor, but she’s still here, so I’m not sure how much weight I’m willing to extend to that argument. Of course, anonymous ballots aren’t everything, but if this is any indication, Cruz’s performance could easily be a favorite among the Academy and she could just pull off the win. I also just feel like she’s going to win and I’m going to trust my gut on this LOL.

SAG anonymous ballots (excluding the fake Academy Queens ones) showed a trend in favor of Jessica Chastain, including the ones shared by Joe.

BAFTA Anonymous ballots went 3/6 for Scanlan and she won.

So if most ballots for Cruz, I think she’ll win.

My early stumping of Cruz way back even before her LAFCA win was because I figured there could be some dissatisfaction with the performances that were being talked about (too many biopics and films with poor to mixed reviews) and knew that Sony Pictures Classics would come through later on.

I’ll totally admit that this late push might not be enough, but Parallel Mothers was still likely one of the last films a lot of voters saw. If Colman was leading instead of Chastain, I’d be way more hesitant to predict Penelope. But I think Cruz and her film have some strengths that hit where Chastain and her film are particularly weak. She’s a big name and also overdue in her own way, and this film is letting voters see her in a new light. Basically, she comes off as a breath of fresh air in this lineup.

    overdue in her own way

How is she overdue? She won an Oscar in 2008. Yes, long ago for the academy to not take that in consensus (maybe unlike Colman) but she isn’t overdue.
