How is she overdue? She won an Oscar in 2008. Yes, long ago for the academy to not take that in consensus (maybe unlike Colman) but she isn’t overdue.
It’s still a crowning moment when a previous supporting winner gets an Oscar for lead, especially when their career has developed a lot in between (Blanchett, Zellweger, Washington).

That doesn’t make her overdue.
March 17, 2022 at 7:50 pm #1204856857I think Penelope’s narrative is more that this is a comeback moment for her. She was last nominated more than a decade ago and whilst she hasn’t disappeared by any means from the industry (she was in Pain and Glory and Murder on the Orient Express, she was up for an Emmy and multiple TV awards for The Assassination of Gianni Versace, she’s worked with Ridley Scott and Asghar Farhadi) but this is the first time she’s been in the awards spotlight for film in years and she’s returned with quite a big bang with her first leading Almodovar role in a while and one of the most critically acclaimed performances of her career.
Of course this doesn’t mean I think she’s going to win (like I’ve said before I’m predicting Chastain) but I do think it’s something that could very well weigh on voters minds when seeing her performance.

March 17, 2022 at 8:14 pm #1204856879One thing that benefits Cruz is that I get the sense that considering their rich collaborative history, people really want to see Penelope Cruz win for a Spanish performance in Pedro Almodovar movie and Parallel Mothers is probably the best shot she’s got till now to achieve that.

If we set aside all allegations/ politics hypothetically for once just for comparison sakes, it’s like how people would want Diane Keaton to win for a Woody Allen movie or how one would want Uma Thurman to win for a Quentin Tarantino film or Johnny Depp for one of his collaborations with Tim Burton (the last one is never gonna happen though).

The former’s got too big of a mountain to climb to pull off what would be one of the biggest upsets in Oscar history.
March 17, 2022 at 9:28 pm #1204856933Last year the ballots failed to predict the Frances win, but they were totally on point with the Hopkins upset. Come through Penélope!
March 17, 2022 at 9:40 pm #1204856940I’m not predicting Penelope because of one ballot. Sorry, but I think she’s third at best. Chastain and Colman seem to be the top two from my perspective with KStew and Penelope Cruz being the underdogs, and Kidman being a possibility.

She’s not the lone nom from the film which could be a plus.

I prefer my roses whiteMarch 17, 2022 at 9:58 pm #1204856956I don’t consider Oscar winners to be overdue for Oscars. Overdue narratives are only compelling when the person has never won, or hasn’t won in decades after tons of nominations like Meryl’s case for The Iron Lady.
