Maybe not locked, but it’s most certainly the favorite. The places I could see Dog potentially winning are Cinematography and Score, and it’s pretty much second place there, too. I still think Dog can (and possibly will) win, but I imagine it’ll be with screenplay-director-picture.
Could Dog take Editing and be a Picture/Director/Editing kind of winner? That category is wide open too
March 24, 2022 at 2:03 pm #1204874119DeBose and Kotsur had more pressure on them to deliver good speeches since they’re unknowns compared to Smith. I do think Kotsur did a better job on the mic than DeBose, who was understandably nervous.
But if people are going for others, I think that just speaks to how tough this category always was. I understand how Negga and Balfe missed. You had to be carried by a strong film to show up here, and even Dench only survived because she’s such a big name.

Wasn’t the supporting actor in Belfast an unknow he still got in after all
March 24, 2022 at 2:21 pm #1204874143These anonymous ballots are always cool to read. Of course, can’t read too much into them when making my predictions. That being said…
I do have Cruz winning best actress but I won’t be surprised if I change it to Chastain right before the prediction deadline.
The enthusiasm for Troy Kotsur is real. My thinking that Power of the Dog would win at least one acting Oscar has faded and I’m now predicting Troy. It will be a fantastic win – I just really like Kodi a tad better. I feel now he’s not going to happen.

An Oscar-nominated veteran with a selective mix of eclectic roles among high-profile films across the last 30 years, as well as notable appearances on beloved TV shows in between. (they exaggerate a little but his first film role is from 1987)
“These are all great supporting roles. I love Jesse and Kodi, but I have to go with Troy Kotsur on this. He deserves it, he’s come a long way, he’s a favorite out there for a reason. (sounds like he knows him)
I was an impressionable young kid when I saw West Side Story the first time in high school… (Raci was born in 1948)
CODA was a great adaptation also, but because I’m [familiar] with that world, there were things I wasn’t in tune with because it seemed to be not as inclusive with what’s going on in the world of sign language today. It seemed a little old-fashioned and archaic in a way, from another period. That took me out of it as far as adapting a screenplay, as there were so many things missing from the deaf community. I don’t mean to denigrate it, it was well done, but The Power of the Dog made me believe that this was a true story.

Ciaran Hinds is a highly respected character actor in Britain. Not a household name, but certainly not an unknown.
March 24, 2022 at 2:28 pm #1204874165That final paragraph is kinda revealing though…

His comment about Timothee Chalamet losing weight for Dune? I don’t think he could afford to lose any weight. Oh, and the gay kid in Power of the Dog. I guess he wasn’t a boring white guy since he picked him. Fun to read.

Great catch. I think it’s him too. I was just wondering the other day why neither him nor Riz Ahmed talked more about CODA. I think Raci mentioned it once or twice but other than that he has been pretty silent about it and now reading this I get why. He seems to have had some problems with the way the deaf characters were portrayed.

He is known as Aberforth Dumbledore in Harry Potter films.

Paul Raci being a Dog stan is the plot twist that I needed.

When the CODA doesn’t vote for CODA it speaks volumes. Eh…
