I was wandering, why are the Guild awards not more prestigious than the Oscars? I mean, I will talk about my field – Cinematography. The ASC has thousands of members, all of them DP’s, while the Oscar branch is like 200. And to get awarded by members of your guild, people who actually know how to appreciate what you do for me sound much more rewarding that to be nominated by 200 peers and then to be voted by random people from other branches.
Look at the DGA – over 10,000 members, yet like 1.2k of the Academy.

The issue of different branches voting for categories they don’t themselves specialise in is a different conversation, but part of the idea of ‘prestige’ is based on history and public perception, and the Oscars are pretty much indisputably of a higher standing than the guilds in that regard. Prestige isn’t the same thing as merit, although I would argue that Oscar nominees who missed out at the corresponding guild award have made for more inspired picks than the reverse around 80% of the time across recent awards history.

Maybe the academy should do the same with the final vote and only let branch members vote only in their field. Of course, this would never happen.
I personally would want to win an Oscar over a SAG and definitely over the Golden Globe. My obituary would read “Oscar winner Keth died….”

I agree. I’m a Cinematographer too. I agree about the DGA too. I prefer the ASC and the DGA over the Oscars
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 11, 2023 at 2:10 pm #1205300462I had to think this question over, and as a guild member I’d be thrilled for the acknowledgement from my peers. But globally, Oscar has the obvious numbers.
But I’d rather have the Pulitzer….

I prefer my roses whiteFebruary 11, 2023 at 3:04 pm #1205300507No one is referred to as “DGA nominee so and so” or “SAG nominee blah blah blah” or as a “PGA winner” in the general context of Hollywood outside of those award ceremonies themselves so the answer is most certainly: no.
Like it or not, the Oscar is the most prestigious.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 11, 2023 at 3:56 pm #1205300534Why is this a thread? The answer is clearly no lol. No disrespect to any guild members but like…most people don’t even know the guilds exist (save for SAG) and the point of awards campaigns are for the Oscar and Emmys, not the guilds. They’re just seen as points on checklists to get to the Oscar.
