    All opinions accepted.

I was looking at the below list of the top paid actor deals this year and I was quite surprised at these numbers. Hollywood is known for spoiling some and underpaying others, and I was wondering how everyone felt regarding these surprising numbers. The reason why I am surprised is that none of these films will be Box-Office hits. I know streaming brings in billions of dollars but, as someone whose trying to make it as a writer, I don’t understand how the Spec Script is basically dead but some big named stars are making more money than ever.
Here are some numbers out there.

    Top Deals of 2021 (Insider)
    https://www.insider.com/highest-paid-actors-in-hollywood-daniel-craig-jennifer-lawrence-2021-8

    1. Daniel Craig (Knives Out Sequels) – $100 million
    2. The Rock (Red One) – $50 million (he made $22 million for Red Notice)
    3. Will Smith (King Richard) – $40 million
    3. Denzel Washington (The Little Things) – $40 million
    5. Leonardo DiCaprio (Don’t Look Up) – $30 million
    5. Mark Wahlberg (Spencer Confidential) – $30 million
    7. Jennifer Lawrence (Don’t Look Up) – $25 million
    7. Julia Roberts (Leave The World Behind) – $25 million
    9. Sandra Bullock (The Lost City of D) – $20 million
    9. Ryan Gosling (The Gray Man) – $20 million
    9. Chris Hemsworth (Thor 4) – $20 million
    9. Brad Pitt (Bullet Train) – $20 million
    13. Michael B. Jordan (Without Remorse) – $15 million

Most of these numbers I do not understand. Chris Hemsworth is the most understanding simply because he has played Thor for 10 years and had great box office success with ever performance. Daniel Craig is the biggest head scratcher.

It was put out in the media (Likely from Disney) that Scarlett Johansson was paid $20 million upfront for Black Widow but she was expecting to make $100 million. If it is true, why on Earth would she ever think she was worth $100 million for one movie?

I love some of these actors but yes, they are overpaid, amazing how the acting career was considered a low level class job 200 years ago and now everyone wants to be an actor because of these numbers.

Are these just upfronts or do these also include backends?

Denzel Washington being paid 40 Million for that flop The Little Things is absolutely ridiculous.

    Upfront.

Warner paid talent additional money due to the streaming/theater release, which led to Denzel getting so much money. Crazy thing is, it was reported that he was still upset about the streaming/theater release. He was paid $40 million but was still upset.

To be honest, the only reason that The Little Things did well on HBO Max is because of Denzel. It did okay in theatres, for what it was…

Realistically, general audiences would not be inclined to watch many of these films without these stars, so it makes sense to me.

And the Daniel Craig one is for three sequels. All on a streaming platform, where star-power is a significantly bigger factor in regarding what people actually watch.

A very annoying young man, who loves cinema. 🙂

The short answer: yes. Obscenely overpaid especially when their movies don’t even break even and/or they bring nothing new to the table with their performances…

    Noomi Rapace Lamb (Actress)
Kristen Stewart, Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall Spencer (Actress, Supporting Actress/Actor)

Absolutely nothing justifies Daniel Craig’s payday for those sequels.

I believe the $100M was inclusive of back-end profits, which we all know ended up failing hard. Explains why Johansson torched Disney when the film “flopped.” Sort of a worst-case scenario for everyone involved: the Black Widow character was past her prime and the audience clamor for a BW movie had since died, like, five years ago lol; the pandemic killed theater profits; Disney+ getting a simultaneous release; etc.

Ryan Gosling getting $20 million for anything is quite surprising as well.
