Why is there so little buzz for this December release?
It seems like prime Oscar bait — the true story that inspired Herman Melville to write “Moby Dick.”
This sweeping epic has it all — a cowardly captain, a heroic first mate, a ship wreck when a whale attacks, adrift at sea, etc.October 28, 2015 at 3:21 pm #196672
I think so. It looks really good to me, but its sudden release shift has left me worried. Still looking forward to seeing it though.

I’m not really buying it. The delayed release date is worrisome and Chris Hemsworth isn’t really a draw without his hammer. So who knows how it’ll do at the box office if it is a critical misfire.October 28, 2015 at 7:37 pm #196674
I noted this elsewhere, but the delay seems to imply confidence. If the film was a bomb waiting to happen it’d come out in January, not December.October 28, 2015 at 9:23 pm #196675
They shifted it for awards. Well Ron Howard took to twitter to say it wasn’t but we know it was. I would see that as more of confidence than its March original slot. But it could get into the techs like sound, visual effects, and possibly score? I think Howard will only be nominated for Frost/Nixon type dramas from now on.October 28, 2015 at 10:01 pm #196676
I don’t care whether it will be a contender or not, it’s a story I’m interested in and I want to see this regardless. But I agree with Kyle and Dominic that the move to me seems more like confidence than the lack thereof.October 28, 2015 at 10:24 pm #196677

This is one of the two films that I am waiting to see that I think are under the radar dark horses; the other one is Creed – I have been really surprised this one isn’t a frontrunner for at least a Best Picture nomination. My gut intuition syas this could move in and one of the other frontrunners people haven’t seen yet will move out… time will tell…December 1, 2015 at 7:21 pm #196679
Just saw the film and if you ask me its chances are dead in the water (excuse the pun). Don’t know why they pushed the film back, seems like a BO flop in the making. Not a bad movie, but not great enough to make it into the race. The best they can hope for would be tech nods I think. Acting is fine but no one shines, characters aren’t really developed enough.December 7, 2015 at 8:57 pm #196680
Just saw it. We are not underestimating it. I don’t think it’ll flop since it doesn’t have much competition this weekend but yeah I may have enjoyed it more as a March release if that makes any senseDecember 8, 2015 at 7:51 am #196681
How many nomination it can get? Which categories?December 8, 2015 at 11:36 am #196682
