I’m hearing Meryl Streep has joined Joaquin Phoenix and will be part of the Montreal-set shoot of Ari Aster’s upcoming Disappointment Boulevard,” that’s according to DeuxMoi and a source from MTL Production that, more or less, confirmed this rumor to be true.

Aster will start filming “Disappointment Boulevard” in Montreal on June 28th. The director of “Midsommar” and “Hereditary” will be re-teaming with A24 for this new project. Phoenix and Streep are set to star in the mysterious film which originally went by the title of “Beau is Afraid.”

In 2011, Aster directed a short film titled “Beau.” Described as a “surrealist horror film set in an alternate present,” Phoenix’s character would play an “extremely anxious but pleasant-looking man who has a fraught relationship with his overbearing mother and never knew his father.” When his mother dies, he makes a journey home that involves some wild supernatural threats.

No release date has yet to be announced for “Disappointment Boulevard,” but a 2022 release feels inevitable for this one. Stay tuned …

Wow, this could be one of the edgiest roles of Meryl to date. I think she knows we want to see something new from her.

So swap out mental breakdown for wild supernatural threats and this sounds a lot like Joker to me already

Ari Aster’s profile must be highly lauded to be working with Streep at this stage of his career. Good for him. Midsommar was snubbed for costume and cinematography.

The mother in Joker is basically the same: overbearing, doesn’t tell kid who dad is when he is a kid, both die and he goes down dangerous path.

Even Jessica Lange would have been a more inspired choice, other older actors exist…

Surprised Streep took this when it sounds right up the alley of another icon thespian who won their first Oscar in the 80s

This is not the synopsis of Disappointment Boulevard, that was the synopsis of Beau is Afraid.

I don’t think that’s the plot of this film. I remember reading this film is about the life of an entrepreneur.
