The chemistry between Bradley and Gaga on-screen is great. I definitely found myself rooting for them. Both Jackson and Ally are kinda badass and to see them soften throughout the movie was very believable. One of the later scenes when they’re in his room in rehab was especially beautiful to me. The songs throughout the film are ofcourse also great and all sung live. And the touches of humour also worked for me with the drag queens, Ally’s dad, Jacksons dislike of Ally’s manager (especially him mocking his short socks was funny to me), … There are some shortcommings in the details but they made a mature and moving film. Love is the core of the film and I was touched by it.

I had very mixed feelings about the movie. Everything was solid and competent yet I disliked the exploitative relationship at the heart of the movie, I disliked the character of Jackson, disliked that Ally is the only female in the whole entire movie, was one of the few who wasn’t enamored with Cooper’s singing abilities, found the acting good but not great. I found the screenplay cliche-ridden and of very poor quality. Certain scenes worked really well and were well directed and the love story seemed to really work for most people – I also was surprised by how much I liked Andrew Dice Clay as Ally’s father. Several of the songs were great, especially “I’ll Never Love Again”. I really did not like the direction and writing of the suicide scene. I think lots of awards fanatics resented it’s front-runner status. I sort of enjoyed this movie but found it very flawed. I had given it a grade of “B” immediately after seeing the movie but after all these months I realize I hardly remember this movie at all. I would be disappointed if it were to win Best Picture, but I acknowledge it has several things going for it in what I believe will be a two-way race with Roma, the masterpiece that could also win Best Picture.

I concur with everything ( Roma is my favourite film too , it may be one of the best I’ve seen this decade; it was breathtakingly shot ).

Yes, I think it was the relationship that bothered me the most , I think there were some beautiful shots in it though and I probably went in with high expectations based on the trailer and initial reviews. It could just be that this type of story has passed its expiration date …I’ll probably give it a rewatch once it become available on home theatre. I couldntc help but think had this been a character study about Ally and her life I would of probably enjoyed it much more .
