In 1979, Ingrid Bergman received her 7th and final nomination for her final film role in the swedish film Autumn Sonata. Her co-lead, 2x Academy Award nominated actresss Liv Ullman, was snubbed.
Do you think, considering the competition, both should have got in?
Also, between the two performances, which one is your favorite? [Answer in the poll]
ReplyIt's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!

1978
Jane Fonda Coming Home – WINNER
Ingrid Bergman Autumn Sonata
Ellen Burstyn Same Time, Next Year
Jill Clayburgh An Unmarried Woman
Geraldine Page InteriorsI would have nominated Liv in Lead Actress and removed Ellen Burstyn. I would not have voted for Jane Fonda. My pick would have been between Jill Clayburgh or Ingrid Bergman. Ingrid did not deserve to win Supporting Actress for Murder on the Orient Express.

Not wild about Burstyn or Fonda though. Page is certainly a borderline Supporting case but I think her natural quirks and eccentricities worked perfectly for that role.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen the film but I would’ve considered nominating Aurore Clement for THE MEETINGS OF ANNA.

Ullman was robbed of a nomaintion for scenes of a marriage too. Movies premiering on tv before theatrical release wasn’t a disqualification yet so snubbing the movie was bizarre and many directors thought scenes from a marriage was robbed of all the possible nominations it could’ve gotten and even had a petition to overturn the academy decision

Oh yes, she for sure deserved to be nominated for SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE.
The only real issue was she would’ve had to compete against Gena Rowlands. That, for me, might end up being the most difficult personal vote for me to have to decide on in Oscar history.

I wonder had ullman been nominated she would’ve won? She came so close to winning the Oscar for both the emigrants and face to face. Had liv been nominated for scenes from a marriage I think liv would’ve won especially Rowland still lose the Oscar to Burystn despite being considered the front runner.
