Early in the show, Momma Rose is raising youngsters. How does 70-year-old Streisand play THAT? Furthermore, Babs’ pipes aren’t crystal clear no more. Are there enuf old recordings on the shelf of her belting out Rose’s Turn to dub into the celluloid?March 14, 2012 at 8:23 am #57109
Will she end up directing this as well? Will anybody else want the job?
Anybody…anybody…Bueller…March 14, 2012 at 9:09 am #57110
I like Mervyn LeRoy’s film adaptation of GYPSY, even though both Rosalind Russell (as Rose) and Natalie Wood (as Louise) were dubbed, and have watched it at least two dozen times. However, I doubt Barbra Streisand would risk her reputation as one of the premier vocalists of the 20th century (selling over 140 million records and winning the Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, and Tony) if she were truly unable to sing the part of Rose in a remake. As for her advanced years, Ms Streisand still looks good (for her age), and today’s makeup artists can make her look 30 years younger for the early scenes. Ms Streisand is one of cinema’s greatest musical comediennes and I would welcome her take on this musical.March 14, 2012 at 9:16 am #57111
Wasn’t Meryl Streep available?March 14, 2012 at 9:27 am #57112
She should direct Lupone.March 14, 2012 at 9:41 am #57113
Lupone couldn’t get the film financed.
Streisand shouldn’t direct anyone. It’s not where her talents lie.
I think she’d be better doing this on stage than on film at her age (though likely her voice couldn’t handle it). Since musical tracks are dubbed in movies, I imagine they could handle any diminishing of her vocal talents on film. But at her age, she might be just as out of place as Lucille Ball was in the disastrous film version of Mame.March 14, 2012 at 9:43 am #57114
You mean Patti “legend in her own mind’ Lupone?March 14, 2012 at 11:50 am #57115
She’ll be swell, she’ll be great. Babs looks 40 and is in great voice!March 14, 2012 at 1:09 pm #57116
Way too old for the role, and this reeks vanity project as much as Yentl was.March 14, 2012 at 1:31 pm #57117
Oddly this is one role Streep probably wasn’t even thought of for, that I think she could succeed in..? Take that for anyone who doesn’t think I’m a fan! Glenn Close could sing it, as well.March 14, 2012 at 1:43 pm #57118
This would make much more sense for Madonna (at least in terms of age/image).
Maybe Reba McIntyre.March 14, 2012 at 1:53 pm #57119
Reba is an inspired choice.. I suppose you are right about Patti Lupone not being able to get it financed. She never really took off in her film work, though she is pretty funny on 30 Rock. This role fits her like a glove as was very evident to those of us lucky enough to see her on Broadway.March 14, 2012 at 1:54 pm #57120
Ages of their playing the role –
Ethel Merman (51)
Rosalind Russell (51)
Bette Midler (48)March 14, 2012 at 2:15 pm #57121
Before his death, Arthur Laurents gave his blessing to this project, starring Babs. Don’t know the legalites.
