What are films that seem great on paper but not in execution? Here’s some of my choices:

The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy: There’s been a million jokes about why these movies don’t work (boring politics, cringeworthy humor, thin characters, idiotic plots, inconsistencies with the original trilogy, creepy romance, etc), but it’s still really sad to see how they turned out. Darth Vader’s one of cinema’s all time greatest characters, and the movies that should’ve made him even more interesting ended up taking away from him. I know they have their fans (I was one of them when I was a kid) and they have legitimately good moments (and two very strong performances from Ewan McGregor and Ian McDiarmid) but the prequels don’t even come close to reaching their true potential.

Last Action Hero: A unique and interesting story with a genuinely strong villain that gets bogged down by an unfocused plot and uneven tone that fails to scratch the surface of what the film promises.

The Purge and all its sequels: The first movie has a great idea, but ends up forgoing it in favor of a more standard home invasion plot. The sequels did a better job of actually using the concept, but they were still weighed down by such a pretentious presentation and an inability to actually have fun with the over the top story.

Collateral Beauty is one that comes to mind, the concept and the idea for the whole movie is great. But the execution of the film was bad.

R.I.P.D too, although I do like the movie I think it could be much better. The whole concept of dead people serving as policemen if they don’t get to heaven is great but the whole story could have been much more.

Sucker Punch had so much potential, I like the movie too and I think it could have also been so much better. Snyder has good ideas but needs to up his game to deliver them.

Lucy too, the idea of someone using it’s whole brain capacity at the same time intrigued tomhe shit our of me but I think it didn’t deliver the way it’s was supposed to.

I’m badly disappointed by that atrocious Alien³ and the campy Alien Resurrection. But if there’s any movie that wasted a really great potential, i’m going with Covenant. The adventure to the Engineer planet. Wow. But the execution was lackluster, feels like a standard action adventure violent horror movie.

Alien 3. I remember the commercial was just Alien with the three written mathematically like it was to the third power. I was so excited since it made it seem like it would be even bigger than Aliens. It was such a disappointment and (spoiler alert) x x x x x x x x x x x The way they kill off the kid in the first scene is just unforgivable. I choose to pretend the series ended with Aliens and Ripley and Newt lived happily ever after.

You’re not alone in that train of thought. I and many other fans say that the story canonically ends with Aliens. He’ll, I’m guessing even David Fincher says some given how much he hates his film.

Production of that movie was hell…many ideas different writers directors attached at one point and nothing concrete until they brought David Fincher in to direct after a proposed version with Vincent Ward as director was cancelled during pre-production
During shooting the studios constantly harrasing Fincher alleging the movie is too dark and not giving him freedom to work had he had it his way I think he would have come up with something great
thats why he hates his film.
…About the story of Ripley and Newt happily ever after follow up story I don’t think it would have worked…it would have turned alien a family drama instead of a horror/dark movie it is

Yeah, the way the film came out really isn’t Fincher’s fault, he dealt a really shitty hand.

Much like another James Cameron associated franchise (Terminator), the Alien movies should’ve just stopped with the second installment. It ended perfectly and there was no way that it could be followed up properly without undoing at least part of its happiness. Unfortunately, Alien 3 found a way to undo literally everything good about it.

I recently re-watched Aliens on HBO, and Weaver truly should have won that Oscar. I use to say that her performance was overrated but her performance was truly one of the greatest ever!

The Island. I’m not a fan of Michael Bay, but I found the premise intriguing and things looked good until halfway of the movie… but then the movie almost becomes a succession of commercials with an escape going on at the same time. But the concept was nice and it could have been a great movie if the script went deeper

Passengers: Wasn’t a terrible film, but it could have been much better.

Have a great day if you see this!

I have never seen a movie in which the entire crowd at the movie theater was so pissed off until I saw Aliens 3.

I’d say it’s terrible, but I agree it had good potential. If they had changed the story to be from the point of view of the female lead than it could’ve a good horror film. Unfortunately no studio would ever stunt cast Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt together in anything unless if it was a romance.
