Sometimes, a stinker can make it into the major categories at the Oscars (Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay, and Adapted Screenplay) if the cards are played just right.
Discuss examples of these WTF moments occurring.

Despite all the editing fights and different versions Christine Lahti still managed a well deserved Supporting Actress nomination.
The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is like that too. It’s a terrible movie but Charles Durning is just great in his one little song. I always give the academy credit for noticing good performances in bad films.

Gloria is terrible yet Gena Rowlands got nominated.

July 29, 2018 at 8:19 am #1202597826I think Sophie’s Choice is kind of a bad movie but of course Meryl’s performance is the gold standard nonetheless.
I read several comments here that A Man for All Seasons is among the worst best picture winners so would that qualify here?

THE OSCAR 100 (#30-26): Al Pacino, Edith Evans, Judy Garland, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton

Glenn Close supporting nomination for that film about beisball, it should be also included.
For me “Life is Beautiful” is the worst movie ever made. The only good thing about it, its music… the rest is just a pure joke.

Sacrilege I say! Brenda Vaccaro was the best thing in that gosh awful ” Once Is Not Enough “. She definitely was the flicks VIP and an Oscar nomination was deserved. She runs the gamut of brash loudmouth to vulnerable powerfrau that just couldn’t get the man.
Which version of ” Gloria ” are you referring to? The Sharon Stone remake is beyond terrible but the original with Gena Rowlands is great. Rowland’s performance as the ultimate badass in heels with a heart of gold was extremely Oscar worthy. Unfortunately for her it was a very competitive year for actresses. The entire movie rocks. The scene with Rowlands on the subway train taking down the two mobsters is everything. Kick ass movie. Highly recommended.

That is ridiculous. I do not understand how you can actually have seen The Post and think “oh this is a bad movie” It deserved the two nominations it received AT THE VERY LEAST.
ReplyCopy URLJuly 29, 2018 at 3:56 pm #1202598051The Judge, with nominee Robert Duvall, was super lame.
I suppose Meryl Streep is the Queen of this. The simple fact that she has been nominated many times alone or with one or two extra nominations for that film is very telling.
Music of the Heart is kinda terrible.
I do think The Post is super easy, by the numbers, sort of good, sort of whatever film. I would’ve never even given it a tiny little thought for a BP nomination. Other women deserved Streep’s nomination.
I think Into the Woods was extremely disappointing.
