This category always confuses me. It’s essentially a newcomer award but the nominees are usually people who have been active/known for a while. In this case, two of them have won TV BAFTAs (Aimee Lou Wood and Naomi Ackie) and two are in the one of the biggest shows of the last few years (Emma Mackey and Wood again).
Frankie Corio, Stephanie Hsu and Gabriel LaBelle should’ve been nominated.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 17, 2023 at 7:29 pm #1205250072They should just change it to breakthrough performer. The rising star definition is open to interpretation (seeing this year’s field you could argue Vanessa Kirby was a rising star when she was up for Pieces of a Woman and she was already a BAFTA TV winner like Wood and an Emmy nominee) and I feel like it doesn’t really make much sense for Harris Dickinson to be up for this award last year when he’d already been a prominent face on the indie and even British film circuit for the past few years and Stephanie Hsu not to be up this year for quite literally being the breakout success story of 2022.

That’s crazy. But he’s also predicting a Curtis snub and I admit I thought about it. Something tells me she wasn’t top 3 there.

Jamie Lee Curtis is a BAFTA winner.

I know but I don’t think she’s top 3 here for this role. Just my gut and the fact that Steph wasn’t on the longlist as well.

January 19th at midday, 12:00 PM GMT
So we still have about 24 hours left to wait.

I’m sure one year they announced them at 7am so I had to set my alarm… wonder why it’s later?

Vis-à-vis Corio
I know from talking to previous committee members that they don’t tend to consider child actors — they’re looking at long-term career prospects rather than individual performances
