I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this but I think what we can tell from this year is that the pandemic (and the fact that lots of voters were still watching things from/spending a lot of time at home) skewed last year’s nominations in best actress and actor skewed our predictions of how the top 3 voting system works. There was no reason otherwise for someone like Williams to miss when The Fabelmans was even able to get into original screenplay (which I think probably shows more of just how weak Aftersun is than how strong The Fabelmans is).

I didn’t make predictions in international film this year but Corsage getting in here makes sense seeing the small but significant word of mouth it managed to gather here in the UK amongst certain circles over the festive season. See How They Run kind of shocked me in British Film though. Surely it wasn’t a jury pick?

When Wood got snubbed my heart literally pounced for Nighy when they were reading out the leading actor nominations. His, Thompson’s and McCormack’s nominations are probably my favourites of the day.

Tár only just went wide less than a week ago in the UK so the fact it has been able to do this well (in spite of such strong competition from other films on the best film long-list) feels very telling. If Blanchett wins the LFCC award I think she’s probably got it in the bag seeing how BAFTA almost always match up with them in wide open award fields (Yeoh winning would actually signify to me that this race isn’t wide open and that she’s winning the Oscar).

Also thank god we can finally say the words BAFTA nominee Angela Bassett!

Also can we get Hayley Atwell and Toheeb Jimoh back to announce the nominations every year? So swift and professional.

Banshees didn’t get in for Casting

Is there a correlation between BP and Casting?

    No, that category is juried.

    acting largely copy+paste frontrunners.

    no bukky/radha/wunmi/joanna/renate/tessa to be seen.

feels like the jury was there to align with oscar predictions and make sure the non-white contenders got in. if it was a straight vote, i’m thinking some of the latter would not have made it, a la the infamous robbie double nom year.

I was on the fence about Banshees in casting because it’s widely known that Farrell and Gleeson were never cast per se. And Keoghan probably came in with Colin.

Yeah, Banshees missing casting makes sense considering that McDonagh had the specific cast in mind as he wrote the thing

I thought it was brilliant how they allowed pauses between each name. No rushing at all.

    Here for the comedies
