Wells not making it in is probably the biggest surprise for me.
It still doesn’t make any sense to me.
January 19, 2023 at 2:27 pm #1205254214Holy Spider is the most controversial movie in the lineup and UK and USA industry are afraid of angering Iran
Both governments have come out pretty solidly on the side of the protestors, and it’s not like either the American or British film industries are particularly aligned to the Iranian one, so this seems a bit hard to believe.

Maybe and maybe not. We all didn’t think Will Smith was going to win and look what happened……
January 19, 2023 at 7:08 pm #1205254541Bassett was a jury save.
You think so? Why would she be a jury save?

She will win easily. The race is over.

January 20, 2023 at 5:43 am #1205254866Elvis’ overperformance astounds me! It didn’t get into Screenplay or Director, but it getting 7 below-the-line categories is huge. Cinematography? Comeon! (I know it got into the cinematography guild but be serious man!)
Think it could be underdog to win Cinematography. Walker being the woman to win the category was featured in every major UK TV channel news story covering the nominations interesting. The narrative is definitely there and for a film that was broadly liked too.

I feel like people overestimated it? It was a quiet film, a debut film and I feel like it got in exactly where it should have? It’s a highly regarded small film with one rising star who is the main focus of the movie. Imo it was never getting film, directing or screenplay, like, it’s just way too small for that.
Here for the comedies

Elvis and The Batman are finalists for both the American AND British Cinematographers organizations/guilds. I think both films are likely to get Cinematography nominations.

2023 Oscar

Unfortunately I agree. It’s a wonderful flim but as you said, it’s small and didn’t have the push it needed. I think the recognition for Mescal was the right decision.
January 25, 2023 at 9:32 am #1205266493Florence Pugh and Niamh Algar were robbed of long-list mentions (and I’d go as far as saying a nomination for the former) for The Wonder. Just truly outstanding work from both.
Have no idea what Tom Burke is doing in the LFCC’s supporting actor lineup though when his performance in this isn’t even his best supporting performance in a film this year.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.
February 1, 2023 at 4:09 am #1205279161I was looking at past winners, and usually Best Film and Best Director go hand and hand, except for 3BB (Del Toro was too strong) and 12 Years a Slave. Those are also the only times when the Screenplay winner won Best Film.
So it’s probably EEAAO and Daniels with Banshees winning Screenplay, or Banshees and McDonagh with EEAAO winning Screenplay.
Not that far fetched is All Quiet winning Best Film and Berger winning Director. That would mean the DGA winner wins Best Director at the Oscars.
