They match up with the Globes more often than not which tells me Banshees could take Best Film here but everyone and there mother knows Everything Everywhere All at Once is the current Best Picture frontrunner and BAFTA don’t tend to deviate they much when there is consensus on something in a race.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.
February 1, 2023 at 8:41 am #1205279395I’m really interested to see if it’s Yeoh or Blanchett here. I’d put my money on Blanchett but Yeoh could take it just as well.

But Banshees still beat it at GG despite EEAAO being the frontrunner there too and leading the critics. Why would BAFTA go with EEAAO here and not further push Banshees? Almost all BF winners at BAFTA won the Globe too.

BAFTA kind of played both sides last year by giving Adapted Screenplay to CODA despite giving Film to The Power of the Dog. I wonder if we end up seeing a similar result this year. EEAAO could lose screenplay and pick up other things, like Director, Editing, or double acting wins. But then again, Banshees feels like it has to have screenplay in its package if it’s going to win overall.
Something also just feels wrong about TAR potentially walking away with only Blanchett here, but I wonder if its recent UK premiere gave it a second wind.

February 3, 2023 at 3:58 am #1205281999I think Yeoh has a better shot at bafta than people think. She has a prior nomination here for CTHD while Blanchett has 3 baftas already (she beat Paltrow here for Elizabeth). Is Bafta ready to reward Blanchett for a fourth time?

Oscar or Bafta: which came up with the better nominations?
If you were to remove Everything Everywhere All At Once from the Oscar nominations, things begin to look pretty dire. The Academy has sprung back to pre-#MeToo mode and is all-too-comfortable reverting to bad voting habits.Oscar or Bafta: which came up with the better nominations?
The [US] Academy were right to nominate Brian Tyree Henry for Causeway. The Baftas were right to nominate Danielle Deadwyler for best actress in Till.Oscar or Bafta: which came up with the better nominations?
It appears the US Academy might have forgotten the conversations about women and people of colour. Did they not watch The Woman King? How is it possible for Gina Prince-Bythewood to be overlooked? I am also disappointed that Danielle Deadwyler’s moving performance in Till was not recognised by the US Academy.Speak on it BAFTA voters!
FYC: Danielle Deadwyler, Best Actress in a Leading Role

We’ve been shown plenty of times voters don’t think like that. If they consider Blanchett’s performance the best it won’t matter.

Using the “Cate has won before” narrative has been a mistake this entire season. She repeated easily at GG, CC, Trifecta and Venice. If she loses, it’d be because they liked Yeoh (and her film) more than her.

The three BAFTA awards is not a ceiling for British Academy as there are those who have 4, 5, 6 BAFTA awards (I think Judi Dench has 6, Maggie Smith has 4 etc.)
And as ejaru said, this entire season we have seen Blanchett winning again for this performance, even breaking or tying some records.
All of this doesn’t mean Yeoh can’t win, especially since she has been nominated 20 years ago. But, it should also be noted that so far, “TAR” is doing relatively good in UK.
Spreading the Love: Oscars 2023
Best Picture: Everything Everywhere All At Once
Best Director: The Daniels
Best Actor: Colin Farrell
Best Actress: Cate Blanchett
Best Supporting Actor: Ke Huy Quan
Best Supporting Actress: Angela BassettFebruary 3, 2023 at 9:25 am #1205282389Cate Blanchett is just as respected in the UK as she is in the US (if not even more so) so I don’t think the membership is going to refrain from voting for her just because she’s won three times already (something most of them probably won’t even be aware of). That being said Everything Everywhere All at Once is evidently a big contender and Yeoh is also quite established over here as an actor so I don’t neccessarily think that she’s locked to win the BAFTA.
Whenever there’s a wide open field BAFTA tend to match up with the London film critics (whether with Weisz over Adams, McDormand over Kirby, Ejiofor etc) and I’m anticipatinh Blanchett is probably going to continue her critical streak there so if she’s win competitive for the Oscar she should be able to win here. If Yeoh wins I think it would tell me that this isn’t a wide open race and that she’s going all the way to the Oscar like with Kotsur last year.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

I share a lot of their feelings, but there seems to be some lack of self-awareness about how the jury system is doing the work that their full voting body likely wouldn’t do, and they’ve taken steps with their recent voting changes to be more aligned with the Academy as it is. Good individual nominations aren’t going to solve the need for culture change around the screening and voting periods for both BAFTA and AMPAS.
