Quan not winning is really surprising. (and upsetting)
This award season has really bottled down from being the most exciting to utterly mundane. There has either been a Banshees or Tar or EEAAO sweep everywhere.
February 5, 2023 at 11:50 am #1205285668the quiet girl winning today best foreign lenguage picture over saint omer ( that had a best picture nomination) could anticipate a suprise win for the quiet girl in the BAFTA?
February 5, 2023 at 4:44 pm #1205289570And TAR wins Best Picture of the Year and the London Critics. Banshees won 3 out the 4 acting noms, Screenplay and still lost Picture. Todd Field winning Director at the Oscars is something I have been toying with ever since Scorsese raved about the movie. This kind of critics push has got to be useful to something.
Field is definitely in the mix for Director. It can be tempting to work backwards from the potential BP winner and assume it’s taking screenplay and director too. But if you think EEAAO or Banshees is winning, neither of them need to win this category.
Is a voter who really likes or appreciates TAR satisfied with only voting for Blanchett? I’m not so sure. It stopped being seen just as a Blanchett vehicle not long after Venice. Him going home empty handed is starting to seem a little odd to me. BAFTA shouldn’t be too tough for him now, but he probably needs DGA to make it convincing.

What if TG:M wins PGA? Lol. Did anyone think The Whale would be there?

I prefer my roses whiteFebruary 5, 2023 at 7:36 pm #1205291427My concern is if Todd Field splits votes between screenplay and director. Some might think they’re rewarding him in director and some in screenplay.

But that is the issue with everyone. All 5 nominated directors are also nominated in Original Screenplay, so I suppose all will be splitting votes.
Spreading the Love: Oscars 2023
Best Picture: Everything Everywhere All At Once
Best Director: The Daniels
Best Actor: Colin Farrell
Best Actress: Cate Blanchett
Best Supporting Actor: Ke Huy Quan
Best Supporting Actress: Angela BassettFebruary 9, 2023 at 9:48 am #1205298166It looks like we’re understimating All Quiet on the Western Front in Best Film given what is happening in Europe at the moment. The way I see it this is the movie that could upset Banshees and not EEAAO. A quirky science-fiction thriller may just be a touch far out for them.
February 9, 2023 at 11:27 am #1205298357Since when are London Film critics considered this major precursor? I was always under the understanding that they’re no more prominent than any other big city critics award like Boston or Chicago. Relevant when contributing to a trend, but not really race-changing on their own.

It has been a dry week. So even a minor event seems like a tide-shifting domino. Which in reality it isn’t.

They aren’t considered a MAJOR precursor and BAFTA has often deviated from their picks in some categories. See last season for example. But they do have industry voters among the huge membership -for a critics circle- so sometimes they do tell us where the wind is blowing. I knew De Armas was going to be top 3 at BAFTA because she showed up in here.
