Quan not winning is really surprising. (and upsetting)

It is not, Barry Keoghan is 10 times better actor and has the best performance. Also, those are the second nominations at Bafta for both Keoghan and Gleeson, they are not first timers here (unlike the Oscars).

It’s weird how these forums (and Film Twitter) are normally on red alert for anything hammy but seem to have formed a blind spot for Keoghan’s performance

How is it “hammy”? The performance with all its ticks and shenanigans never seems like a caricature. Very in tone with the film while giving the impression of someone with a very likely intellectual disability from real-life. For me it feels completely natural, I can even say I’ve met people like Dominic. I’d use “hammy” for Blanchett in TÁR.

I don’t agree with the notion that Barry’s performance was hammy. It’s a very quirky one but it was never on ham territory for me. His performance is massively overrated though.

People will just say anything when the season is long enough, won’t they?

    For Your Consideration:
The Banshees of Inisherin in ALL categories, including:
    - Best Picture
    - Best Director
    - Best Actor (Colin Farrell)
    - Best Supporting Actor (Brendan Gleeson)
    - Best Supporting Actor (Barry Keoghan)
    - Best Supporting Actress (Kerry Condon)
    - Best Supporting Actress (Sheila Flitton)
    - Best Original Screenplay

The performance has a unique charm and he as an actor is very likeable, so many can forgive the forced quirkiness and overdone delivery of lines. There’s also the fact that the performance is in an acclaimed film and many blindly follow the critics’ opinions. I think his performance is pretty cool but I can’t take seriously anyone who thought his work was better than Gleeson’s.

Keoghan plays a deeply traumatized and abused human being and I still found him quite subtle especially when he gets his heart broken by Siobhán. He mostly expresses his pain and anguish through his eyes. What a bad take to consider his performance hammy.

His behavior is so ambiguous that you read it in a totally different way the second time around when you know what his character is about. Nothing short of a masterful performance, just like Gleeson’s and everyone else’s in that movie.
