January 18, 2023 at 9:01 am #1205250618I feel that the Daniels missing directing will be the big shocker.
Banshees, Tar and All Quite were the three most voted I think, Aftersun (British sensation and critical darling) and Saint Omer(won the Grand Jury Prize and Best Debut at Venice)are almost the two locks to be saved form the juries, there are gonna be two women for sure, maybe even three. And then I see Decision to Leave (won Directing at Cannes) as the prestige pick.
In this way it is pretty similar to last year, which gives me even more assurance:1. Titane is Decision to Leave = Titane is also international and algo won big at Cannes – Palme d’Or, both are seen as visually innovative and challenging films.
2. Happening is Saint Omer = Happening also won big at Venice (Golden Lion) and it is also a French film directed by a woman and it is also a complicated story about women.
3. Aftersun is After Love = the British debut that is sensation and critical darling.
4. Drive My Car is All Quiet on the Western Front = Both international, long as a duration movies that are acclaimed (Drive My Car even won Best Screenplay at Cannes), both are adaptations of iconic book/short stories from a book of beloved authors that are fighting for a seemingly unlikely nomination in Best Adapted Screenplay that will end up happening.
5.Licorice Pizza is The Banshees of Inisherin = Both will end up winning Best Original Screenplay, both men are adored by the Academy, McDonagh already has 4 wins out of 8 nominations, while Anderson currently has 8 nominations with its first win being last year. Both movies are locks for Picture not only here, but also at the Oscars.
6. The Power of the Dog is Tar = The critical darling of the year, the most sophisticated film. Someone may say that Everything is the critical darling, but that would be a lie, Tar is the actual favorite of the real critics and it has a sophistication that Everything seriously lacks.January 18, 2023 at 9:04 am #1205250627I have had a feeling recently that Todd Field could win Director here. I think Banshees will win Best Film and do very well across the board, but I’m not sure it’s so beloved that it will just dominate and win everything. I think BAFTA will go pretty big for TAR.

It doesn’t help Fraser that The Whale isn’t released in the UK until February…

I feel he won’t be top 3 but I could see the jury saving him. Same with De Armas and Deadwyler.
Performances that may not be the most popular ones but the jury will save for being great.
"EGOT" and "Triple Crown of Acting" winner: VIOLA DAVIS!!!!

It feels weird but I’m not predicting him while I’m predicting Hong Chau.

I don’t think it’s weird. It could be another Olivia Colman/Jessie Buckley for The Lost Daughter type of situation.
January 18, 2023 at 9:37 am #1205250748I wonder if Tom Cruise could be top 3 here, especially if Top Gun: Maverick overperfoms there like Don’t Look Up did last year with Leonardo DiCaprio in this category (and he was probably top 2).

These are actually quite good comparisons/explanations. I would, however, like to remind you only the top2 with the membership will make the Director lineup, unlike the acting categories. Also, AQOTWF is nowhere near as acclaimed as Drive My Car. In fact, the movie performed extremely poorly with critics overall. It’s definitely more of an industry darling than critics.
January 18, 2023 at 9:44 am #1205250805I have a feeling Brendan Fraser might be snubbed. Thoughts?
I have him missing because I just honestly can’t find room for him. Farrell and Mescal feel like they’re solid, Butler feels like he could be top 3 if we’re going by last year’s results and the correlation between strongest best film contenders and the top 2 in the acting categories, McCormack has a very jury friendly performance and a very jury friendly profile in a very jury friendly film…
If Fraser gets in then I think he’s either top 3 here or the jury pick him over someone like Nighy but I feel like a jury will be kinder towards Living and his narrative than they will The Whale and Fraser’s (even though Fraser has never been nominated before whilst Nighy is a 2 time winner).
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.
January 18, 2023 at 9:48 am #1205250818Davis doesn’t seem like a jury pick at all based on the role. Surprised that so many are predicting her. Is it because of the diversity factor? Because that’s not everything when that jury picks the nominees.
Or you think she’s top 3?
January 18, 2023 at 9:48 am #1205250820Why do people think Brendan will miss?
January 18, 2023 at 9:53 am #1205250836Honestly having a hard time thinking who the jury will pick between Emma Thompson and Leslie Manville.

Emma Thompson is like the most obvious jury pick to me after Danielle Deadwyler. Looking at that longlist, I would be a bit surprised if she didn’t make it. She also hasn’t been nominated for a BAFTA in almost 10 years.
