With Sundance having already happened, the Cannes lineup having just been announced and Sundance London on the horizon alongside the return of the separate discussion threads for the Oscar categories, I thought why not create one for BAFTA for those of us who are crazy compelled enough to discuss them at this stage.

What films do you think could find appeal in the jury? Which ones do you think could be big across the board contenders with multiple BAFTA branches. Feel free to discuss any thoughts you have below!

FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

I’m sure everyone here knows I’m rooting for EEAAO, but I want to be optimistic enough to say that I genuinely think it will do really well here. In fact, I believe the juries will want to nominate specifically Ke Huy Quan. That screams jury pick to me. And of course, I think if Michelle Yeoh fails to show up anywhere this season, she’ll at least show here.

I also think Women Talking, She SaidBanshees of Insherin might do well here, too, but that’s just a hunch haha. I think it’s tough to say because the BAFTAs went totally lowbrow and populist from the longlist, to the nominations, to the wins (at least compared to 2020, that is).

Depends of their swings this year they somehow accepted coda and will Smith

I think women talking , she said , the son ( which could take the BAFTA for screenplay), the fablemans , poor things , probably white noise

The jury is totally gonna boost lily Gladstone , Michelle yeoh , Jessie Buckley

Sam mendes is a respected British director if the movie is critically acclaimed he would make the jury

Sam mendes is a respected British director

Being a respected member of the British film industry didn’t exactly help Kenneth Branagh, Emerald Fennell, Rebecca Hall, Joanna Hogg and Kevin MacDonald get nominated with the jury.

FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

If Empire of Light ends up being a The Favourite/Three Billboards style contender and she still doesn’t get in to the top two or nominated by the jury then I-

FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

That Prince William vendetta must’ve been against Olivia instead of Kristen cause she couldn’t get in for Landscapers either😭

And it’ll be so annoying to not predict her for the exact reason of not wanting to get fooled after her nearly annual snubs, but then she gets nominated anyway, thus plummeting our points 😭

I except the son to stream roll at BAFTAS , it is the most accessible and highbrow movie of the bunch like the father

This year both feels very stacked in Oscar contending releases and in independent British films (the Cannes lineup alone…). It will be interesting to see what ends up making the long-list and what ends up being snubbed.

I do think Bill Nighy and Emma Thompson should be in good positions to get long-listed considering they more or less fit both categories (it won’t surprise me if either or both of them end up winning at the BIFAs).

FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

How does ‘She Said’ qualify as a British film? And I’m interested that you include it in your top 10 films but don’t include Maria Schrader in your top 10 Directors.

Also, I hope that if the film is as strong as I expect it to be, that Samantha Morton makes the BAFTA long list for Best Supporting Actress; multiple scenes were filmed in the U.K. which I suspect will feature her. Historically, the work of her character, Zelda Perkins, to make non-disclosure agreements unlawful may turn out to be the most significant legacy of the N.Y. Times’s investigation into Weinstein’s conduct.
