January 3, 2023 at 6:54 am #1205219240Aren’t only 10 performances longlisted this time?
January 3, 2023 at 6:59 am #1205219247@Wolfali- Do you think that at the BAFTAS, All Quiet on the Western Front could get in for Best Picture and Director (maybe over Glass Onion or The Woman King?). I just think that especially with the war in Ukraine, given its quality AND subject matter, it might well get in the BAFTAS.
January 3, 2023 at 7:05 am #1205219261Think the longlists for performance are only 10 this time out
The Acting chapter vote for their top 10 in each performance category. Their vote will determine the
first seven in the longlists for Leading Actor, Leading Actress, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress.
The final three places of 10 in each category will be determined by a longlisting jury, selected from
those ranked 8-15 in the chapter voteJanuary 3, 2023 at 7:11 am #1205219269Yes, only 10 performances are longlisted.
Longlists- Top 7 is voted by the acting chapter and then the longlisting jury picks 3 performances from those ranked 8-15.
Nominations- The top 3 voted by the acting chapter gets automatically nominated and another jury, the nominating one, chooses three performances from those 7 still on the longlists.
January 3, 2023 at 7:25 am #1205219288This will be interesting, especially in Actress and Supporting Actress. Those categories are stacked with capital S. Actor and Supporting Actor, on the hand, are the definition of tumbleweeds.
January 3, 2023 at 7:35 am #1205219297From just trying to cut Wolfali’s lists down to 10 I’m realising that there is strong potential we have another #BAFTAsSoWhite this year. Hardly surprising given that bringing back the jury system only concealed the truth rather than there being any actual change.

Hardly surprising given that bringing back the jury system only concealed the truth rather than there being any actual change.
I think there’s also the possibility of a lot of female centred stories missing out due to the disparity in competition between the leading and supporting actor fields and their female equivalent categories being exacerbated this year. I’m very curious to see what happens with Women Talking in particular because I think there’s a real risk now with 10 slots that none of the female supporting cast members are long-listed but Whishaw is because of how much of a wasteland supporting actor is.
I understand why they’ve cut them down to 10 so they can match up with the Oscars more (which is ridiculous but that’s a conversation for another time) but I think this could actually backfire for BAFTA on that as well. I won’t try and trim down my acting long-list predictions just because I want to keep my sanity intact but I think if Glass Onion does over-perform like Don’t Look Up and House of Gucci did on the long-lists last year that it’s quite possible that it stands in the way of a number of contenders on the long-list who will almost certainly make it in at the Oscars over them but are in less widely seen films (Chau, the Women Talking ladies etc). Every field is different of course but I doubt people like Mark Rylance, Cate Blanchett and Al Pacino were filling out the last few slots in their categories last year when the likes of Anya Taylor-Joy, Ana de Armas and Andrew Garfield were also on those long-lists.
@Wolfali- Do you think that at the BAFTAS, All Quiet on the Western Front could get in for Best Picture and Director (maybe over Glass Onion or The Woman King?). I just think that especially with the war in Ukraine, given its quality AND subject matter, it might well get in the BAFTAS.
I think it stands a shot at making the best film long-list (I’d probably have it in a field of 15 because of the Netflix factor alone). The last two slots feel really wide open there.
Director will be more difficult and I think Berger will have to rely on the jury to get on the long-list. Cameron, The Daniels, Field, McDonagh, Spielberg already feel like stiff competition for the membership five and that’s without even mentioning previous BAFTA directing winner and 2 time nominee Baz Luhrmann.
Solidarity with the striking writers. Pay them the wages they are owed for bringing us the content we are all on here because of!
January 3, 2023 at 9:00 am #1205219378I’m expecting Women Talking to bomb here because of its release date. Every year something major underperforms because it hasn’t gone wide in the UK at the time of voting and it’s always the films that aren’t frontrunners as they aren’t top of the viewing pile. When will the distributors learn?

In response to the legitimate #BAFTAsSoWhite concerns, looking at Wolfali’s list of 15 potential Supporting Actresses, I suspect that Hahn, Hudson and Mulligan would be the first three to miss out, and if you’re correct about Women Talking bombing, that would eliminate Buckley and Foy. If we’re both correct, then at least the Supporting Actress category would have numerous WOC in it.

I think that’s a big assumption that The Woman King actresses are gonna make it over the Glass Onion ones with this group and with the latter film airing in the middle of voting
January 3, 2023 at 9:50 am #1205219437Curious to see if David Lynch gets in the longlist. I think he was the reason Dano and Hirsch got snubbed from the Golden Globes (and the same thing could happen at SAG as well). If he gets in at BAFTA, it would be another prove that he’s taking votes from them.
