British Film
1-3. The Banshees of Inisherin, Aftersun and Living: All long-listed for best film.
4. Good Luck to You, Leo Grande: The screenplay mention (which is in a category without any jury interference) tells me that even if Thompson was somehow a jury pick that there is a strong base of support around this film within the academy. Feels like the type of film that could also get picked by a jury even if it doesn’t make it in with the membership.
5. Matilda: Just a sheer amount of visibility (it’s the 10th highest grossing film in the UK this year!) and Thompson managing to slip into the supporting actress long-list feels indicative of this film having a very concentrated amount of support that helps it get into wide open fields like this one.
—
6. The Wonder: Haven’t seen it but feels like the type of small homegrown drama a jury would love (and seems to have a lot of critical support judging by its BIFA and LFCC nominations).
7. Blue Jean: Ditto.
8. Brian and Charles: Doesn’t seem to have quite as much support as the two mentioned ahead of it but it’s hard to ignore how much it stands out in a field like this. Feels like the Everybody’s Talking About Jamie of this year.
9. The Swimmers: Reviews weren’t great but the topicality of this film does seem to have brought it some passion.
10. Emily: Seems to be a very well received biographical drama and feels small enough to almost give it an underdog argument in a field like this compared to something like Emma.
—
11. Empire of Light: Could make it in over either Grande or Matilda with the membership, probably won’t do any better than Ammonite with a jury.
12. Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris: Wouldn’t surprise me to see a jury pick it as it feels simultaneously like a crowdpleaser and an indie success story that the jury might want to support although I presume with the cast and production values they’ll be seeing it as more of the former.
13. The Lost King: Feels a bit too divisive and controversial? Although knowing BAFTA that could probably help it lol.
14. Lady Chatterly’s Lover: Feels too fluffy.
15. See How They Run: Should be thankful it’s even on the long-list in the first place.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.
January 17, 2023 at 5:20 am #1205249036Voted for Emma Mackey; I think all of them have big careers ahead though.

January 17, 2023 at 5:28 am #1205249048Ariana debose , Kodi Smit McPhee and bukky bakray got nommed at BAFTA rising and in their categories
Also, in 2010, Carey Mulligan was nominated for both Best Film Actress and the Rising Star Award; she won the BAFTA for Best Film Actress for An Education but lost the Rising Star Award to Kristen Stewart, whose third Twilight film was released that year. (The three other losing Rising Star nominees that year were Jesse Eisenberg, Nicholas Hoult, and Tamar Rahim.)

1. The Banshees of Inisherin: Do I need to explain at this point?
2. Everything Everywhere All at Once: It wouldn’t totally shock me if it actually did miss and it turned out the Daniels were a jury pick in director all along but at this point I’m assuming the love for this film extends to this side of the atlantic seeing how well the film did both on the long-list and with the London film critics.
3. Elvis: Unless Aftersun is really much stronger than we’re expecting I don’t really think there’s much reason to doubt it after its director long-list mention.
4. Top Gun : Maverick: Ditto.
5. All Quiet on the Western Front: I am wary about this not because I don’t think it has enough support (acting, directing, screenplay and editing is a STRONG long-list combo) but because whilst the screenplay and editing nods were because of the membership, I’m not sure if it was a jury pick in those acting categories and directing or not and I worry that could be skewing my predictions a bit like with West Side Story last year. I find it hard to deny just how well it did on the long-list though (at least WSS was already quite established as a contender at that point) and I do get flashbacks to The Mauritanian where people underestimate how strong the support is for this film and how appealing its subject matter is with this bloc of voters.
6. Aftersun: Whenever there’s major British contender in the Oscar race like this film it tends to get in here most of the time (the only glaring exception really being The Two Popes a few years ago) and Aftersun performed exceptionally well on the long-list and got into all the key categories. I guess the question here is whether the insustry support is strong enough for it to overcome these high scale tentpoles it is competing against for one of these last few slots.
7. Tàr: Could make it in (it performed fairly well in spite of not having gone wide in the UK when long-list voting happened) but at the same time I just wonder why couldn’t it make it into editing over Babylon and Decision to Leave when it has been making it in with other groups who have included it in their Beat Picture lineups? Could be nothing but I’m expecting it to be the big surprise snub this year in best film that everyone overreacts to but then it performs just as we’d expected it to before these nominations come out at the Oscars.
8. Triangle of Sadness: Clearly seems to have some support but perhaps not enough to get into a field of 5 (that directing omission feels glaring).
9-10. The Fabelmans/Living: I don’t think the former will perform as disastrously as people are expecting it to and I think the latter will have a great mentions : nominations ratio but I think both films needed to perform better on the long-list for me to consider them.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.
January 17, 2023 at 5:49 am #1205249076Rising Star nominees:
Naomi Ackie
Sheila Atim
Emma Mackey
Daryl McCormack
Aimee Lou WoodJudging by social media reactions, Mackey, McCormack and Wood seem to have the biggest reaction/most fans.
Think it’s a three horse race between them for the win.

Wait.
I guess Daryl McCormack fits the bill the most. This is such a weird group.
Judging by social media reactions, Mackey, McCormack and Wood seem to have the biggest reaction/most fans. Think it’s a three horse race between them for the win.
Mackey and Wood, those unknowns who haven’t starred on a Netflix favourite for 3 seasons, won a BAFTA or starred alongside Bill Nighy in an Oscar contender …. those two? If I was Atim or McCormack, I’d be playing dirty lol.
Here for the comedies
January 17, 2023 at 6:59 am #1205249155I don’t really understand this lineup. Does this mean you think Williams Was top 3 and de Armas is gonna be a jury pick? The former just seems too unlikely, given how much they didn’t care about The Fabelmans. I would think de Armas rounds out the top 3 and someone else gets jury-picked.
Yes, I do think multi nominated actress Michelle Williams was TOP 3.
I don’t think industry really cares about the “controversy” in Blonde. Her performance is artsy and the jury is there because of diversity after all.
January 17, 2023 at 7:07 am #1205249170Also, I’m not going to try to guess who was TOP 3 or not. Last year it was a mess and was high likely Cumberbatch was nominated as a jury pick. Not to mention the Best Actress mess.
January 17, 2023 at 7:18 am #1205249193Not really, this category was invented to shine a light on new faces, not previous BAFTA winners and nominees…
Yep. I can like the people without raising my eyebrows at several of these being very insular picks. Like, I like Naomi Ackie, but she has a BIFA, a BAFTA, and was billed over Oscar nominees and an Emmy winner for a Star Wars film. That’s not in the spirit of the award.

Do people really believe this? Most likely it was DiCaprio for playing an atypical role. I could see a jury liking his performance as a nerdy scientist.

It would have been the only juried category where DLU got in. It was absolutely Cumberbatch.
For Your Consideration:
The Banshees of Inisherin in ALL categories, including:

- Best Actor (Colin Farrell)
- Best Supporting Actor (Brendan Gleeson)
- Best Supporting Actor (Barry Keoghan)

Idk. DiCaprio would have gotten the Oscar nom if he was indeed top 2 at BAFTA considering that DLU made BP and the Academy liked it. Cumberbatch was always second in the race so him not being top 2 on his home turf doesn’t add up. People just don’t want to accept it was DiCaprio because he’s a big name. But his role was pretty atypical and subtle compared to his previous work.
January 17, 2023 at 7:42 am #1205249242We’ll never know but I still think it was Smith who was the jury pick in spite of his win. It’s not like anyone was arguing Joanna Scanlan and Troy Kotsur weren’t jury picks either when they won (being top 2 in the nominations round of voting and being top 2 in the winners round is very different) and it’s not like Dunst or anyone else from DLU were jury picks either whilst Ellis probably was one.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.
