Idk. DiCaprio would have gotten the Oscar nom if he was indeed top 2 at BAFTA considering that DLU made BP and the Academy liked it. Cumberbatch was always second in the race so him not being top 2 on his home turf doesn’t add up. People just don’t want to accept it was DiCaprio because he’s a big name. But his role was pretty atypical and subtle compared to his previous work.

I mean, the top2 in Best Actress didn’t get the nom and I assume that either Jones or Haim had to be among them alongside Gaga. But it’s not like we will ever know. Still, I think DiCaprio getting in at all, whether through jury or top2, shows that BAFTA can be quite tough to predict with their new system.

    For Your Consideration:
The Banshees of Inisherin in ALL categories, including:
    - Best Picture
    - Best Director
    - Best Actor (Colin Farrell)
    - Best Supporting Actor (Brendan Gleeson)
    - Best Supporting Actor (Barry Keoghan)
    - Best Supporting Actress (Kerry Condon)
    - Best Supporting Actress (Sheila Flitton)
    - Best Original Screenplay

But DLU made BP as opposed to House of Gucci. DiCaprio would have made sense instead of Bardem yet… I suppose Haim was top 2 but she was a newcomer and they clearly didn’t like Licorice Pizza that much. Anyway, not buying Cumberbatch wasn’t top 2 on his home turf where TPOTD won Best Film. So maybe we’re both wrong and wolfali is right…Smith was the jury pick.

It will be interesting this year because like JV I’m predicting Williams to be in the top 3 because The Fabelmans is just a much stronger contender than Blonde and Good Luck to You, Leo Grande are but I am wary of the fact that last year there was pretty much a complete lack of consensus until SAG (whose winners most copied over to BAFTA) which isn’t the case this time round with the Globes back, pre pandemic campaigning back and this having become a year long Oscar season as opposed to a 3 month one where voters have to cram things in all at once. She’s not top 3 but even looking at the supporting actress long-list I just have to wonder would someone like Carey Mulligan even have been long-listed if she didn’t get in at the Globes?

FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

London Film Critics Circle nominations give you a good idea of who’s getting nominated
