Medusa DeluxeNovember 4, 2022 at 4:04 am #1205141415Nine nominations for Living including Aimee Lou Wood and Production Design. Paul Mescal and Emily Watson nominated. The Wonder in Cinematography… BIFA kind of ate!
November 4, 2022 at 4:05 am #1205141417This is great for Aftersun, Good Luck To You, Leo Grande, Blue Jean and Living. I think the latter especially will play really well with BAFTA and they will seriously push Nighy for that Oscar nom. Really excited to see Blue Jean.

November 4, 2022 at 6:41 am #1205141477Was Holy Spider eligible for international? Disappointing if so
FYC:

Ana de Armas, Julianne Nicholson - Blonde (Best Actress, Supporting Actress)
Samantha Morton - She Said (Best Supporting Actress)
Kerry Condon - The Banshees of Inisherin (Best Supporting Actress)November 4, 2022 at 8:19 am #1205141503Was Holy Spider eligible for international? Disappointing if so
I think it was on the shortlist. But I’m not sure.
November 4, 2022 at 9:42 am #1205141578When I read that they had nominated Good Luck to You, Leo Grande for best feature but snubbed Thompson and McCormack in the leading performance category I got so perplexed but then I saw they were nominated for best joint lead performance and honestly I think that’s better because they’d probably stand a better chance of winning that than winning the lead performance category over Nighy. Had this category been in place last year then Carrie Coon and Jude Law could have both won for The Nest which would have been much better than one of them winning and the other not (which could have very well happened because Joanna Scanlan was practically unbeatable last year whilst Adeel Akhtar wasn’t so much) or both losing.
God’s Creatures got exactly what it deserved. Films that are just simply ok but have note-worthy performances tend to vary in how they perform here either getting ignored completely because of the film’s limitations or undeservingly over-performing because they have excellent performances behind them but BIFA pretty much nailed it here. I wouldn’t mind if they threw Watson a win although I’m rooting for Nighy till the very end. Mrs Harris Goes to Paris performed exactly as I expected it to but it would have been nice to see Manville show up here nonetheless.
I assume Banshees was eligible but it just couldn’t be seen on time for voting like with Spencer last year.
Was Holy Spider eligible for international?
No.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

Someone asked Guy Lodge on Twitter about it -he was chair of the nomination committee- and he said it was ineligible.
November 4, 2022 at 10:45 am #1205141620This seems like the best possible outcome for a lot of these contenders that will need strong BAFTA support (Nighy, Thompson, Mescal). They all have chances to get highlighted here, and this was clearly a big endorsement of their films.

I think it’ll be very interesting here to see which of Aftersun and Living wins best film. BIFA tends to really grant towards sweeps which makes me think that if Nighy’s winning Lead performance that Wood will win supporting but with them not directly facing the Aftersun leads (who could very well take the joint lead performance category) it’s going to be very interesting to see what the path whatever best film winner takes.

It’s really hard for me to tell. On paper, it still seems like Living might be the stronger all-around player? Plus it’s trading on much more highbrow source material. But if appreciation for Charlotte Wells and overall love for Paul Mescal win out, Aftersun could make the case here.
I still think Living has a lot more to gain if it does win. I’d have to reconsider its chances in Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars, which I’ve been a bit hesitant to do just yet.
