Something interesting I noticed:
Youngest performer last year in each longlist
Best Actress: Bukky Bakray
Nomniated: yesBest Actor: Adarash Gourav
Nominated: yesBest Supporting Actress: Helena Zengel
Nominated: noBest Supporting Actor: Alan Kim
Nominated: yesThis year, the youngest performers in each category are Emilia Jones (there’s less than a year between her and Zegler), Cooper Hoffman, Anya Taylor-Joy and Woody Norman. I’m a bit hesitant to predict Anya because of the reception her film got and she’s not really an unknown like the nominees were last year. However, I think I will predict the other three.

January 13, 2022 at 8:47 am #1204724413I don’t think Cooper Hoffman happens here. Whilst Licorice Pizza strikes me as something that could do decently with a jury there doesn’t really seem to be much passion behind his performance. He may be a newcomer but so was Helena Zengel last year and she had a performance that had more standout notices.
I do agree about Jones and Norman though. I have the latter in my predictions.

January 13, 2022 at 8:48 am #1204724416Doing both Zegler and Norman atm. While I wasn’t looking at it statistically, I did think diversity in terms of age is something the juries keep in mind.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 13, 2022 at 9:09 am #1204724479Who do you think will get Best Supporting Actor nomination? I have Smith-McPhee and Kotsur (top 2) and Ciarán Hinds, Woody Norman, Mike Faist and David Alvarez as jury picks.
In particular, do you think that the jury will pick Alvarez for diversity over someone else?

I don’t think Kotsur was top2 when Marlee Matlin couldn’t even crack the Supporting Actress longlist. I think Ciaran was to2 with Kodi. Then I have Troy Kotsur, Mike Faist, Benicio Del Toro and Woody Norman as jury picks.

I don’t think I’d even have considered either of them in a field like last year’s but considering how eight of their competitors for the nomination in this category are Hollywood stars with cameo performances or mixed received performances in big studio films and failed Oscar baits… I think the chances of at least one of them making it in with a jury are looking quite strong at the moment.

January 13, 2022 at 9:39 am #1204724632Top2 at BAFTA is obviously Smit-McPhee and Hinds. As for the WSS boys I don’t think both of them are getting in but with the jury I would bet on Alvarez I guess.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 13, 2022 at 9:57 am #1204724682I need to watch West Side Story, to have a better opinion on Alvarez. Cause, right now, I have no idea what to do with him. Especially when Faist is the one sucking up all the acclaim and buzz of the suporting guys.

My instinct is like ‘go with Faist’ but at the same time…that JURY. So I don’t know either.

ReplyCopy URLJanuary 13, 2022 at 11:14 am #1204725085I think top 2 is pretty obvious in Actor and the supporting categories but what do you think about Actress. Colman and… ?

I don’t think Supporting Actress is that obvious tbh. And the second Actress in the top2 will only be known on nominations day.
