Why lose points for not making an easy, likely prediction like Tessa Thompson?
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2022 at 3:53 am #1204731352O.K., just remember on Feb. 3rd to acknowledge that Tessa Thompson isn’t on the nominees list (I liked her performance very much, she just isn’t getting a nomination for it imo – she gives a better performance than several of the frontrunners, especially Kristen Stewart).
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2022 at 3:54 am #1204731354Just for fun. Ranking Leading Actress in two ways.
Likelihood of being ‘Top 2’
- Olivia Colman
- Kristen Stewart (not confident on this but the way the British press spoke about her this week when snubbed at Globes and SAG reminded of Mulligan last year.)
- Nicole Kidman (if she’s winning the Oscar she’s got to be close)
- Lady Gaga (I just can’t predict her for top 2 when I don’t see her winning the Oscar)
- Alana Haim
- Rachel Zegler
- Jessica Chastain
- Frances McDormand
- Joanna Scanlan
- Jennifer Hudson
- Tessa Thompson
- Jennifer Lawrence
- Emilia Jones
- Renate Reinsve
- Claire Rushbrook
Likelihood of being picked by jury if not ‘Top 2’
- Tessa Thompson
- Joanna Scanlan
- Renate Reinsve
- Kristen Stewart
- Olivia Colman
- Jennifer Hudson
- Claire Rushbrook
- Alana Haim
- Frances McDormand
- Emilia Jones
- Rachel Zegler
- Jessica Chastain
- Nicole Kidman
- Lady Gaga
- Jennifer Lawrence

Freeman, you haven’t answered my question. Please explain the logic behind thinking a jury would be more likely to pick Hudson over Thompson. Perhaps you’ve thought of something the rest of us haven’t.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2022 at 4:20 am #1204731365Last year, the jury went with Alfre Woodard, Radha Blank, Bukky Bakray and Wumni Mosaku over Viola Davis. I think that shows Tessa Thompson is ahead of Jennifer Hudson lmao. The former is in a b&w arthouse movie that deals with race, while the latter is in a typical basic Hollywood biopic. Tessa is getting nominated.

I think people are “hope-dicting” her. I don’t think she has any chance at all for a nomination. It will be interesting to see who is right about it. (I don’t mind either way but I really think somebody who has missed everywhere isn’t suddenly going to get a BAFTA nomination when she’s not in a BP contender or a true British indie film – meaning that it is actually British in location and atmosphere).
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2022 at 6:02 am #1204731496That jury won’t give a shit Thompson missed the other precursors. Radha Blank wouldn’t have stood a chance if we apply your weird logic.

Neither did Alfre Woodard and Radha Blank but they made in. Thinking Jennifer Hudson has a better chance for a basic biopic is much more hopedicting from you. You can never rule out someone in a small jury that was instituted to bring representation and more visibility to smaller films. Tessa can miss, but she’s a good bet considering the acclaim for her performance, the themes and discussions around her film, and yes, the british team behind it.

If you wanna predict an specific award you need to take in consideration the conditions to its voting which, at the moment, highly favours Tessa for a nomination.January 16, 2022 at 6:07 am #1204731509People have been underestimating Jennifer Hudson this entire awards season. I was right about her getting a SAG nomination and I was told endlessly that it would absolutely not happen! So I am sticking with Hudson, who has appeared on the British version of The Voice for years – I think she will get an Oscar nomination too.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2022 at 6:09 am #1204731515Many people considered Hudson for SAG considering her strong campaign with that group and their method of voting, it is not true she wasn’t predicted even tho aside of the priority top 5. Nothing is a rule out with a jury, but you need to consider the specific conditions of this awards to predict.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2022 at 6:56 am #1204731569Maybe BOTH Tessa and Jennifer will get nominated. I’ll be so glad when this awards season is over because we all getting very obsessed over who’s gonna get nominated, who shouldn’t be nominated…………

So your reasoning for thinking Hudson is ahead of Thompson is nothing to do with the jury or BAFTA but simply based on the fact that some people didn’t predict her for SAG? (I was not one of them.) And because she appeared on The Voice UK three years ago?

Hudson could absolutely happen at BAFTA with a jury. I wouldn’t be surprised if she gets in & ultimately receives an Oscar nod. People need to remember Aretha was a beloved icon and the production history of Respect is long documented.
