Hudson could absolutely happen at BAFTA with a jury. I wouldn’t be surprised if she gets in & ultimately receives an Oscar nod. People need to remember Aretha was a beloved icon and the production history of Respect is long documented.
Exactly PLUS I don’t see Tessa being the only WOC nominated…………

But Tessa does seem safer for a nom considering what the jury stands for and their choices last season. And since the membership is already selecting the top 2 then I feel like the jury will focus even more on great performances that under the old system would probably get overlooked.

While the BAFTA winners are a good indicator of Oscar winners, this is becoming less and less a predictor for nominations.

ReplyCopy URLFYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.
January 16, 2022 at 8:35 am #1204731678It´s worth reminding that voting for the Oscars nominations will close on Feb.1st while BAFTA noms will be announced on Feb. 3rd so making it or not at BAFTAs it will mean nothing if someone isn´t already “in” at the Oscars. For us, in the categories where it´s just the chapter voting, they could help us to see some things coming in our predictions (same if we have some very obvious “top two” in the juried ones) but, other than that, Hudson (or anybody else) won´t be receiving any type of late push among some lazy voters just because she got picked by the british jury.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2022 at 8:41 am #1204731694Both Will Smith and Jennifer Hudson are in movies that are too commercial and American in sensibility to be considered safe for a jury pick. If I understand correctly, BAFTA has a small jury that selects the saves and they have to watch all the movies longlisted. It’s not the same as the SAG nomination committee at all. They might be saved but it’s really not a sure thing. “Passing” on the other hand is artsy and the subject matter is relatable for Britons, not to mention that its ambiguity is closer to European cinema than it is to standard Hollywood fare.

I’ll be so glad when this awards season is over because we all getting very obsessed over who’s gonna get nominated, who shouldn’t be nominated…………
This happens every year lol. It’s kinda the point of the forum.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2022 at 9:12 am #1204731736I think Will Smith will be an exception to the BAFTA matching Oscar stat in the lead actor category this year. He will very likely win SAG and will be in a best picture nominee so should be fine at the Oscars. But here, Cumberbatch could get his big win of the season.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2022 at 9:14 am #1204731742Have people talked about how massively King Richard underperformed here? Misses for editing, sound, score, cinematograph, hair and makeup, supporting actor (Bernthal), supporting actress (Sidney — if Woody Norman can make it, she should have been able to considering she’s fucking great in the movie) and more in fields of 15. Pundits who think Will Smith is winning here are in for a big fat surprise. Cannot wait to see people clutching their pearls as though it wasn’t foreseeable. I could see the film being shut out.
Editing YES but other than that, it did pretty good being long listed at BAFTA’s
