Austin butlers performence is a heath ledger style. Epic performed that even th academy won’t be able to deny plus it checks all the boxes for the academy

Likely nominations…
Best Picture
Best Director
Best Actor
Editing
Cinematography
Make-Up
Costumes
Production Design
Sound DesignI think Baz will get in for his flashy directing / legacy … especially if the film overperforms at the box office.
Meanwhile, Tom Hanks has the Razzie on Lock for the worst supporting performance.

ReplyCopy URLJune 25, 2022 at 12:26 pm #1204996137Just got home from seeing the movie. Very mixed feelings about it. Austin Butler was very good, Tom Hanks is always problematic when he plays against type as a villain, so much was glossed over in a film that covered about 30 years in the life of a complex human being… The editing was too much editing for me. The screenplay was too simplistic. Yet the costumes, sets, sound, and Butler’s performance were all standouts.
I think it could be nominated for Oscars for Actor, Production Design, Costume Design, Makeup/Hairstyling, and Sound.

Where did you get this idea? The reception of Hanks is obviously mixed to negative.

ReplyCopy URLJune 25, 2022 at 2:31 pm #1204996196Well, it’s exactly what you might expect from Baz Luhrmann’s signature excess and extravagance. This film wastes a committed turn from Butler (some vibrant live performances from him), with tiresome maximalism. The weariful direction results in most dramatic scenes feeling insipid and shallow. The oversimplified conclusion that “Elvis just needed some love” suggests a Luhrmann interested in exploring Elvis’ persona very superficially while heavily leaning into his iconography for surface pleasures. Despite all the overflowing visual gimmicks, hyper-stylized montages and eye-popping camera movements, the boldest (and most dubious) part of it all is Luhrmann’s choice of telling the story from the point of view of Elvis’ manager/manipulator, Colonel Tom Parker (Hanks delivers a cartoonish bad performance, but that’s beside the point). How can a screenplay written by >> 4 << people make the conscious decision of having Elvis as an external to his own story?? You can tell by now that I didn’t like it very much, but anyways…
As far as awards go, it could be a box-office hit and get a lot of nominations stemming from the Academy’s wish of once again appealing to a larger audience or it could perform mediocre and get just a few. Actor, Costumes, Production and Sound could be “deserved” but anything other than that, nope.

I’ll never forgive Taron being snubbed, especially after the fucking Academy rewarded Malek for the mess called Bohemian Rhapsody

Wouldn’t Elvis being competing in Globe drama? Haven’t seen the film but aren’t the musical numbers diegetic? (a la ASIB, BohRap, Judy, Respect)

calm down, Austin.
ReplyCopy URLJune 26, 2022 at 12:12 am #1204996453Hanks recreates a villain so naturally and deeply without stridency that he is more like a friend of the main character, his perfect complement to narrate the vicissitudes of the character from the point of view of the public, the press, the family and the staff.

Pretty sure Elvis is Drama at the GG. It’s not a musical biopic like Rocketman.
