Could Vegas be a Best Song contender? Or is there a rule that makes it ineligible, as it (sort of) samples Hound Dog? It’s a banger.

I don’t think so Foolio.
Hope I’m wrong because Vegas rocks; but no.ReplyCopy URLThe Sunne in Splendour.

I prefer my roses whiteMay 13, 2022 at 11:58 pm #1204951548Looks like a hot mess, which means I’ll enjoy it and it will win many awards…
Could be the awards season BoRhap-cat sweeper, if it becomes one of the must-sees of the year and rakes in the cash that the more-traditional musicals (WSS, ITH, Evan Hansen, Cyrano, et al.) failed to generate. Tall order, but Baz Luhrmann is a superior filmmaker to Bryan Singer by a number of degrees, and we saw how close BoRhap was to an avalanche of Oscar love four years ago after storming the box-office gates like few had expected. Plus, Elvis looks to be a lot more of a movie-movie, versus a rather rote series of episodes distinguished by a piece de resistance (the Live Aid re-creation) that really was BoRhap’s raison d’etre, and the sequence that won Malek his Oscar.
Elvis also appears to have a much more magnetic lead performance than either BoRhap or Rocketman, which was also hurt by coming out only a year after the Freddie Mercury biopic (#toosoon), and lacking that next-level sequence to elevate it beyond what audiences had just seen with the Queen film. The BoRhap Oscar wins are likely in Elvis‘s grasp: Best Actor, Best Sound, Best Film Editing (where it could be facing off against strong competition from Top Gun: Maverick – Hmmm, a Tom Cruise best actor nom? Well, he’s not the same guy by industry rep who snagged noms for Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, of course, but he’s (usually) a name that delivers blockbusters, and TG seems ready to vie for best-of-summer honors, so we’ll see.).
