The question of “what is this movie for” is pretty simple. Going behind the scenes of 50s television can make for a damn interesting movie, and the two people who revolutionized television (Desilu) are compelling figures in their own right.

I’m intrigued by the teaser: the disparity between Lucy Ricardo the goofball and Lucille Ball the stone-cold boss could make for a great movie. That said, I think there’s a reason we didn’t see much of her face.

    Aaron Sorkin already explained why…..

This trailer, we really barely get a glimpse of Lucille Ball’s face. Why did you want to take that approach in cutting it?

I want to give all credit to Molly Albright and her team at Amazon, who created the teaser. Molly tells me that she got the idea of not showing Nicole — we only see her from the back, we see her in the distance but she’s shrouded in light — she got it from the way I do the opening of the film. There’s a prologue where Lucy and Desi are fighting but the camera is focused on the radio, which is about to give us some big news. And they come in and out of frame: They’re out of focus, we’ll see a hand, we’ll see pieces of them, we’ll see none of them. She got the idea from that to conceal Nicole’s Lucille Ball.

Tom Cruise would have been amazing in that role.

Maybe. I am a huge fan of Cruise and he is Very Underrated. Still, it was weird how Sorkin talked in those private emails: He never saw Michael Fassbender in movies and he hated Christian Bale for some private reason

Aaron Sorkin is Great at Writing but his style of Writing is Very Modern. I have the same problem with Tarantino. Both of them are Great but their styles seem Very Weird for old times. That’s why Aaron Sorkin worked at his finest with David Fincher: Only the younger generations talk like that

I strongly suspect the movie is going to focus at least in part on not only tensions between Lucy and Desi over tabloid reports of his infidelity, but also on Lucy being called before Joe McCarthy’s House Un-American Activities Committee to testify about her connections to the Communist Party. (Desi is reputed to have said at the time that “the only thing red about my wife is her hair, and even that’s not legitimate.”) Lucy had registered with the Communist Party in 1936, and ultimately testified before HUAC that she only did so to please her grandfather.

I’m a little nervous and a little curious to see how Sorkin might deal with McCarthyism, and the moral implications of how Lucy, unlike so many others in her position, managed to avoid being blacklisted.

JK Simmons nearly steals the film as William Frawley. He will be in the conversation, as will Kidman, who is phenomenal in what may be the best performance of her career.

This is pretty…well-put. The tiny snippet from the show — yeah that’s nothing like Lucy in the show. Maybe that’s okay, but something the trailer really did not explain to me was: wtf is this movie about and why do we need it? Lucille Ball stands up to Hollywood execs? That’s what it sounds like.

This is a teaser not an official trailer. Why do people think they’re going to get all the info about a film from a teaser? Did you get all the knowledge you needed after watching the Spencer teaser?

I mean, what is the purpose of this site if not for wildly speculating about things we don’t know?

This is exactly what I’ve heard from another source. He’s in my predictions.

Just out of curiosity, have you personally seen the film, or are you relying on the report of someone else? (I’m not denying this is true— I just don’t know.)

    Trailer

you guys. that first shot of Nicole as Lucy when she forgets her line and looks up.. Nicole is beyond miscast. she looks downright creepy in this. screw Sorkin. Blanchett would have been perfect for this, and now we’ll all be stuck with this uncanny valley of desperate biopic impersonations forever.

I really liked Kidman in the trailer. She looks so well cast. The focus should not be the look but the perfomance and I could see the pain in Lucy’s eyes in one of the shots. Hope she does justice to the role and Sorkin does justice to her.

She might be great but Kidman is very delicate. Her hand gestures, all of it. I don’t need or think impersonation is good acting per se & she can be wonderful, but it is hard to unsee the miscasting. Still. Can be great!

Hot (unpopular? don’t kill me) take: The apparently well-honed precision of J.K. Simmons’s William (“Fred Mertz”) Frawley and Nina Arianda’s Vivian (“Ethel Mertz”) Vance only worsens the perception gap between Kidman/Bardem and Lucy/Desi. If Simmons and Arianda steal the show, well, we can see how….

I think this will definately net Nicole Kidman an Oscar nomination, a hollywood Legend playing a hollywood legend.
