^ I haven’t been around nearly as long as either of you (pook & Benito) but even I feel like I miss the “old Goldderby” whatever that was.

RDJ will not campaign for an Endgame Oscar, the fanboys can let it go now

Banderas just needs a GG win to keep the ball rolling. His fate is in HFPA hands.

Let’s be real. That would be lit. Banderas just needs to win the Globe a la Huppert and voilà.

I’m sorry but even though Banderas is superior, there’s no way the HFPA is going to deny Phoenix an award for his performance in a massively successful movie. Hopefully critics will reward him.

I’ve seen both films and there’s not a place in this universe I could consider Banderas’ performance better than Phoenix’s. Both performances are not even in the same league IMO.

That depends on what kind of performance you prefer. I just felt Banderas WAS Almodóvar. It was such a powerful performance but restrained at the same time. It was a real person.

On the other hand, as I said in other posts, Phoenix is pretty good but I felt he made a lot of effort and sometimes I saw him acting and didn’t think he was a real person. That’s why I lean towards Banderas’ masterful performance. But to each their own!

You see Banderas being subtle while I don’t see him doing anything at all, but that’s of course just my personal opinion (even DiCaprio was way better than Banderas this year in my book). I also felt Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck/Joker always a real person… while also being so multi-versed, there’s too much subtle in that performance too.

But I can picture Phoenix doing what Banderas did with his eyes closed, while I cannot picture Banderas doing what Phoenix did in “Joker”.

Banderas is in trouble. He’s Hawke from last year but will have a lot less success, given my hunch is that many critics prizes will go to Driver. I could even see DeNiro poaching from him if the critics groups really carry The Irishman.

I doubt the HFPA is going to award Banderas, and, given their track record of late, I would say that group might be one of the least likely to award him best actor.

Also, and someone might know better, but can foreign film actors compete in the acting categories? I don’t remember the last one who did because I don’t think the Roma ladies got in last year. Pain and Glory will have to go into foreign film and will not be eligible in Drama. Are actors still eligible in drama/comedy if the film isn’t categorized as such?

He wasn’t getting nominated anyway, so he knows what he’s doing.

I don’t even know where the fake hype was coming from. Delusional af

My prediction is that Joker gets the same boost that Bohemian Rhapsody got from the HFPA by winning Drama Film and Drama Actor, making it’s status as a Picture nominee and Actor winner undeniable.

    That’s… possible tbh

If there’s one thing that HFPA proved last year, it’s that they don’t care about a Metascore. Rhapsody and its awful 49 beat four movies that were rated above 80 💀

I respect Antonio Banderas but his performance is too subtle to win the Oscar. Those who say Phoenix doesn’t inhabit his character need to research for help.

Joaquin didn’t play Joker in this movie.

It was Arthur Fleck character study,a origin of cinema’s most loved villain.Joaquin plays Joker for 5-10 mins and he absolutely nails it.

I can see Joaquin playing Joker in further DCEU movies effortlessly but that is highly unlikely.
