Joker breaking october records all over the place. Largest October Tuesday ever. So much for mixed word of mouth.

oh please, regardless of what the word of mouth turned out to be, Joker was going to do well financially.

General audiences have proved time and time again they don’t give a shit about RT or Metacritic

Driver is just as good. But how you compare such diverse work is not cut and dried. Jmho

Interestingly,  The Squid and the Whale went into Comedy at the Globes and that film is arguably more drama than Marriage Story.

However, I don’t see Netflix denigrating Marriage Story’s prestige and submitting  it under Comedy. Even though, technically HFPA will have the final say where the film ends up.

I’m surprised by it’s lasting power. Definitely NOT a film for mom dad and the kids. Must be doing repeat business. The demographic in my viewing audience had at least half over the age of 40. And lots of women.

Forbes’ Scott Mendelson has an article analyzing how Joker’s been able to have so much staying power.

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2019/10/09/joker-box-office-records-300m-dc-films-todd-phillips-joaquin-phoenix-oscars-china-controversy-logan-hannibal-deadpool-star-wars-it/#7e6205930dbf

His analysis is that because Joker was not as violent as early reactions made it out to be, and all of his violence is carried out on people who at least partially deserved it rather than innocent bystanders, word of mouth is getting out to otherwise reluctant audience members that it’s actually something that they would really enjoy. Seems like DC struck a good balance between bleak and accessible.

Also he’s 99% certain that it will get a release in China, which if so would push it over $800 Million easily.

I know some of you are excited that Joker is doing well BO wise but, really there aren’t any reasons why you would need to share this in the best actor thread because it’s quite obvious that Joaquin will be nominated regardless if Joker is release in China or not or if it beaks 800M.

The Venice Film Festival +  the current BO results is enough for Joaquin and Joker to be considered seriously.

But this is the Best Actor thread. Box Office matters. Few are doubting that Joaquin is in.
Personally I’m happy he shared that with me.
No one is highjacking the thread.

We literally just saw how a film with great BO with mixed reviews overcome the odds to not just win but sweep the season. Of course Joker’s BO run is relevant to Best Actor talk. If it had flopped out people would be talking about it the other way and no one would be complaining.

im not denigrating the role BO plays in best actor. I’m saying given the huge BO opening numbers already reported, it doesn’t matter whether it hits the 800M milestone or not. Because, the BO narrative is already there to support Joaquin’s campaign.

I saw Joker the other day and while I really did not like the movie, I agree that Phoenix did give a good performance. But tbh, I would be kinda bummed out if out of all his movies he would finally win an Oscar for this one. I can see AMPAS giving Joker nominations for Actor and a few techs but I don’t think they’ll like it enough to nominate it in Picture.

Anyway, I’m seeing Marriage Story tomorrow so hopefully I’ll get a better picture of this race.

Why is this thread still open? It’s game over for everyone not starring in Joker.

I gotta say, I’m very proud of the fights here. Sometimes they’re too intense (and nonsensical) for my taste, but its the first time Best Actor is not a cemetery.
You dames keep defending the D you want to see winning. I’m probably the only person in this forum who hasn’t watched Joker but it’s a matter of days.

You close this thread and Movies basically becomes an appreciation round table for Laura Dern (nothing wrong with that) and trying to figure out who came second in 1853 (nothing wrong with that either)

    This is for fun.
