I haven’t seen it yet (alas), but he apparently does.

    Yep, he does.

The Academy had Glenn Close (with 7 noms), Amy Adams (with 6 noms) and Bradley Cooper (with 7 noms) all lose to people who were nominated for the first time ever JUST THIS YEAR. Yes, it may help Joaquin if he pushes that narrative but can we stop acting like having 3 Oscar nominations in 20 years is being severely overdue and hard to deny?

Honestly Bradley Cooper only has four Oscar nominations in the acting categories, and I considered him to be very overrated until ASIB. Let’s not pretend that Phoenix’s these 3 noms were not iconic. Honesly I’d highly value these 3 noms of Phoenix much more than Cooper being nominated 100000 times for Silver Linings Playbook or American Sniper type of nominated performance.

The same applies to Amy Adam whose resumé is not that impressive even if she can have triple the nominations amount of Glenn Close.

I think (we) are all in denial. As much as I’d like to see another contender in a film not yet released, and the precursors split across the board to give us hope and lull us into some kind of anticipation, Joaquin Phoenix is going to win. He just, is. lol

Darling, finally someone that makes some sense in these forums.

Joaquin feels more of a “it’s time” moment than an overdue one. He’s been around for long, people like his past work and he reached his peak of popularity and acclaim, that should lead him.
He would be overdue if his losses were considered a robbery from his work. Which in retrospect, it’s not. Most cinephiles link him to Her and that never was a movie he had a shot.

I apply the same rule to Amy Adams and Bradley Cooper. They’re around for good and are liked but nobody felt they reached that moment yet (Bradley hit it last year but anyway). Which is different from Glenn Close since you can’t have Fatal Attraction and Dangerous Liasions on your resumee unrewarded without feeling this lady were overlooked in her career.

I’m looking forward to seeing your predictions fail so we can go from seeing smug Cersei gifs to sad Cersei gifs.

Glenn Close was in her 7th nomination and much more overdue than Phoenix. Colman her 1st.

I wasn’t arguing that Phoenix would win because he was overdue. I said that in comparison to Driver’s performance, Phoenix seems to be more baity. Though both seem like their going to have plenty of baity moments, which is why this race is pretty even.

    For Your Consideration.

Curious to know why you think he’ll make it in over Banderas and De Niro.

Well it’s your opinion, for some other people they were considered maybe not robbery but kind of unjustice.
Many cinephiles link him not only to Her but first and foremost to The Master but also to his James Gray’s films or You were never here fom Lynne Ramsay etc.

???? Curious to know why you think he’ll make it in over Banderas and De Niro.

I think he’s got a super baity performance and gives the kind of performance that the Oscars have recognized from children in the past.  If the Academy fully embraces the film and it becomes a serious contender, I could see him happening.  I just don’t see Banderas and De Niro happening.  Unless voters really love Pain and Glory, which I don’t think a lot of them will, I don’t think Banderas is safe (he’s also in a foreign language performance).  De Niro is extremely subdued in The Irishman.

I also stand by the fact that just because an actor is famous, a veteran, or well-liked, or overdue, does not guarantee them a nomination.  De Niro and Banderas will not land noms simply for being De Niro and Banderas.  The Oscars love a newcomer.

Or maybe I’m batshit.  Who knows.

Darlings, CGI De Niro will have to be outstanding in order to be recognized for the performance he’s been giving his whole career.
