Eddie Murphy at least has a comeback narrative. It’s funny it works for Renee Zellweger to the point where she’s a frontrunner while Eddie had to fight for a nom for a movie with much better reviews. All in the strength of the categories.

Best actor is definitly more stronger than best actress. I would  love to see murphy get nominated. I think its possible but I feel he would need to win the comedy globe (over Dicaprio and Pryce) and get nominated at SAG.

I understand your point but are Eddie Murphy’s reviews really as strong as Renee’s?

His reviews aren’t as over the top as hers (not a “GIVE HIM THE OSCAR NOW”) but the raves are definitely there. I’ve seen some “it’s his best by far”. But Judy Garland is the obvious Hollywood icon while Rudy Ray Moore was known in the blaxploitation genre so it’s not surprising that she has the more glowing ink. Still, even if Eddie Murphy was on par with those reviews, he wouldn’t win or be a frontrunner.

If Eddie Murphy wasn’t in a Netflix movie I’d have him as my 5th place. However, this is a year where Netflix almost has too much in the way of good contenders, and they’ll prioritise The Irishman, Marriage Story, and The Two Popes over it (in that order).

    So… Finally watched Joker.

Joaquin deserves the Oscar, but he won’t win. I doubt the Academy goes for this performance.

    Damn.

    Processing.

Guess we are on the same team of “thinking he’s deserving and wanting him to win so bad but don’t put too much hope anyway” lol, while there are some people who loath his performance but are so bold about him winning regardless.

Adam Driver has the best shot and I think will most likely win.

He’s been “up and coming” for seven years with acclaimed performances in everything he’s done, with 3 Emmy nods, a Tony and Oscar nod to his name.
He’s worked with nearly every prestigious and respected director in the industry.
He was nominated last year, ushering him into the “Oscar club.”
His performance in Marriage Story has gotten rave reviews from every review out there. (I know because I have literally read every review on the internet of MS.) Driver is an actor who has been given critical praise for his acting to an incredible degree and review after review said that his performance in MS was the absolute best of his career.
The film itself has gotten rave reviews from just about every review out there.
His film was the only movie to show at all four major film festivals this fall.
His film takes place in the “industry” and the Academy loves rewarding their “own.”
People who don’t think that his role is showy are just comparing it to the over-the-top-ness of the fact that Joaquin is playing the Joker. Driver has a “showy” scene in the film that led to a second round of applause at the Venice Film Festival (I believe it was Venice). Reviews have also talked about a few other explosive scenes where his acting is phenomenal. This is paired alongside the subtle and natural tenor of his acting on display.
He not only shows his acting chops, he also sings!
It shouldn’t matter, but it helps–he received outstanding reviews and Oscar buzz for The Report (before MS came out) as well for a completely different type of role.
People thinking that no one knows who he is? The last film of the Star Wars saga is coming out this December, Adam Driver’s name, face and presence is going to be EVERYWHERE. People are going to know who he is.

Yeah, there’s a reason that Adam Driver is THE front-runner. (No disrespect to Joaquin Phoenix. He’s amazing; I’ve been a fan since he first started acting.)

Pretty much every positive point ‘re Driver can be said about Phoenix
    He sings too btw.
Don’t get me wrong. Driver is GREAT in MS. If you haven’t seen The Dead Dont Die I’d recommend it.

    yep perfectly encapsulated my thoughts.

In a way I see this race as a variation on the ingenue vs overdue veteran narrative. At the moment I’m still on the fence as to which way they’ll swing until we get to the major precursor awards

See, I don’t agree that pretty much every point does apply to Phoenix. He’s been working for nearly 30 years. Driver has been working for less than 10, and yet in that much shorter time period he has managed to work with a pretty hefty list of a good portion of some of practically THE greatest directors working in the last 20 years.

Also, Phoenix did not have another film this year let alone one that at the beginning had him considered to be a pretty good potential Best Actor nominee. Driver did for The Report. In fact, he’s still on the list of long shots for that. The Joker was not shown at all 4 Fall film festivals either.. Also, Phoenix has already had 3 Oscar nominations, he wasn’t “just” ushered into the Academy’s club last year, like Driver was.

I’m not saying that Phoenix isn’t amazing. I have no doubt that he is in Joker. He’s Joaquin Phoenix; he’s a brilliant actor. I just think that Driver has more points in his favor leaning to a win than Phoenix does considering his career trajectory at this point, the types of films they are in and the reaction/praise that Driver is getting. See, I don’t think fans of Phoenix get how over-the-top the praise for Driver is in Marriage Story compared to how normally critics praise his work. He really, really has blown them away with what he did in MS.

I will admit, of course, that as much as I love Phoenix, I am biased, though, because Adam Driver has become my favorite actor over the last two years. So, yes, I am biased.

So, yeah, I’ve seen The Dead Don’t Die. I’ve seen every Driver film except The Report and Marriage Story because they’re not available anywhere near me. But, oh, jeez, I desperately can’t wait to see them both! (And I wanna see Joker too!)

All good points. Btw I adore Driver. I knew he wasn’t winning for BKkK but I was still hoping.
Aside from the trajectory I still feel the parallels are all there.

^ Oh, there was no way he was winning for BKK. By the time the nomination came around–and I knew there was no way he WASN’T getting the nom due to him being nominated for EVERY possible festival, etc. he could–I didn’t want him to win at all because I knew people would consider him not worthy of the win. (Which was BS, but still.) Besides, I knew his time would come.

But again, there was no way he was going to win so, yeah.

They just dont get how subtle and pervasive his charisma is. Every time I watched him in something, my admiration grew.
I don’t think he’s going to win this year.

I’m really looking forward to seeing them too. I wasn’t really into Star Wars, actually my introduction to Adam, was his performance in Paterson and since then, I’ve seen his entire filmography. My favourite role of his is in Hungry Hearts.
