It’s fine thinking Phoenix will win, but completely writing off Driver is wrong. The same thing goes the other way too. They both have very strong chances. There’s a reason they’re co-frontrunners.

Take what you will from this:

    @ScottFeinberg: 300 members of @TheAcademy
came out tonight to Paramount to see ROCKETMAN, a movie that debuted in theaters back in May, ahead of the Elton John Q&A. Some had seen it before, but many had not, and quite a few of those were gushing. That is precisely why you do Oscar season Q&As.

Bafta nom for Taron at the very least??? But then, who does he push out of the current 5 slots???

I’d like to see it, he was brilliant but I don’t really see him breaking into the race anywhere. Idk about bafta, is Elton John beloved enough there to make it happen? It would be a shame if Malek won for his razzie worthy performance of a 70s rock star and then Taron gets nothing for his actually amazing performance of a different one. Rocketman also showed that BR would have been much better if Fletcher had been the director from the beginning.

    Joaquin Phoenix
    Adam Driver
    Robert De Niro
    Antonio Banderas
    Taron Egerton

    He could make it honestly.

I’m American, but I think most British users on here will agree that Elton John is very much beloved over there. I’ve heard the term “national treasure” applied to him. Taron would be a fantastic nominee, and while I’m not currently predicting him at the Oscars, I think he’s being underestimated. Let’s not forget he got excellent notices, and Elton’s pretty loved in the US too (he actually hosts a very popular Oscar party every year).

Yep. Unless you came from the future it’s pretty stupid to claim that any of them is 100% winning atm. What I’m saying Driver has plenty of stuff to support his possible  win. And btw the recent scandal with Jeremy Renner in Hollywood kinda comes in handy for Driver’s chances.

It was nice of Scarlett to ask her dear friend Jeremy to do a bit of PR marketing for her hahaha I’m joking

Basically the lowdown is, Jeremy Renner is having a very public and legal spat with his wife whom he divorced. There’s a lot of big serious accusations each of them have thrown at each other and I guess the user was highlighting the parallels of that with the divorce happening in Marriage Story.

If anything it just bolsters the notion that the academy could really embrace Marriage Story because the film is centred on two people in the industry, and majority of Hollywood is divorced so there is a huge level of relatability and sympathetic emotional connection to the material creating an impetus to vote for it and Driver.

MS is marginally more sympathetic to audiences largely because he has more screen time. This might be cathartic for male voters.

On the other hand, many of them have been divorced more than once, and in acrimonious fashion. It could be the last thing they want to be reminded of.

Joaquin Phoenix’s performance has become an absolute fan favorites to be honest.

I didn’t expect it to be this explosive but it is.

Oh come on stop with this ‘joker is exceeding expectations’ bs.

Joker and Joaquin were always going to be the big names in contention. Comic Book movies have a huge following and Joker is one of the most beloved cbm characters to exist, it’s just fact.

Of course Joaquin was going to be a fan favourite, who else was? Jonathan Pryce playing a pope?? Antonio Banderas in a foreign language film??? COME ON

I’m not hating on Joaquin, imo his performance is the best of the year so far, but all this fakeness about Joker being an unexpected fan favourite when twitter is essentially a cbm moshpit and cbm popularity in general audiences is at an all time high is kinda annoying.

(I’m just trying to be objective, so no shade here)

Come on, cut the guy some slack. There’s just no way of knowing with the DC films. I mean, they’re so inconsistent in terms of quality.

As a person who grew up with DC (not a fanboy), I actually enjoy the short period of relief before we get another abomination from that universe. Joker could really have turned out really bad (and I mean, Suicide Squad bad)
