(I’m just trying to be objective, so no shade here) Come on, cut the guy some slack. There’s just no way of knowing with the DC films. I mean, they’re so inconsistent in terms of quality. As a person who grew up with DC (not a fanboy), I actually enjoy the short period of relief before we get another abomination from that universe. Joker could really have turned out really bad (and I mean, Suicide Squad bad)
I mean all his posts are about Joker exceeding expectations. It’s getting exhausting.October 16, 2019 at 3:40 pm #1203140130This post was found to be inappropriate by the moderators and has been removed.October 16, 2019 at 3:43 pm #1203140136

Fair enough, but I guess it’s his one thing he chooses to stan. I’m usually bitchy with half-cooked arguments and trolls (urghhhh), but I’ve really come to respect and show some class with that one person/movie/thing users here love; it’s like their staple. I actually respect
ESOS for the loyalty shown to Octavia
Thatcher (yes, Thatcher) for her noticeable campaign and devotion for Headey
M for the support towards Close and Bates
Deceased Sasha for her sexual fantasies towards Cammy D
Honey for the sheer enthusiasm with Johannson.
Kellis for the “All About Eve” plans in the works with Jeniffer Lawrence.
And this guy is really happy for Joaquin and not harming anyone.
We can be annoyed, but it’s nice to see that fandom can be a way to know people. Just my two cents.October 16, 2019 at 3:47 pm #1203140144
Why are y’all acting like a performance from a comic book movie being more hyped/loved than performances from indie dramas is something unexpected? Of course Joaquin’s performance is loved by the GP, they’re all huge CBM stans. If Robert Downey Jr actually had a chance to win here for Endgame Twitter would back him up too (Funny enough, people were raving about him nonstop on my TL when Endgame came out) It’s literally no surprise and doesn’t necessarily mean he’s 100% winning because of it.October 16, 2019 at 3:52 pm #1203140148
Ok so now I’m going to stay out of Best Actress and Actor threads, for a day or so .

There has been only one actor in history nominated for playing comic book based character before.
And that’s another thing I don’t get. I don’t understand why people are acting like Phoenix is undeniable and there is no way he’ll lose (mind you in October) when only one person has been nominated (and won) for playing a comic book based character and it’s the same character Phoenix is in contention for.October 16, 2019 at 4:01 pm #1203140162

I don’t mind stanning either just repeating the same thing over and over again. I like some of these members as well.October 16, 2019 at 4:23 pm #1203140181
I know its early, but I really only see 2 “locks,” if you can call them that at this moment. In no particular order, I see:
1) Joaquin Phoenix
2) Adam Driver
The 3, 4, and 5 slots really seem to be fluid. We could very well see 3 surprises in the final slots.
I can see:
3) Robert De Niro
4) Leonardo DiCaprio
5) Jonathan Pryce.
Banderas is in a bit of a tricky situation. Yes, his film will be in the running for FLF, but what else after that?
Roma was so acclaimed that it even pulled Marina de Tavira to a nomination. Not saying she didn’t deserve it, but what precursors had she hit before her Oscar nom?
At the moment, Pryce’s film is in “contention” for BA, and Screenplay. It wouldn’t be far fetched to say it couldn’t sneak into BP.
Banderas really only has FLF going for him, and even then that will be overshadowed by Parasite, which will at the very least get BP, BD, and screenplay noms.October 16, 2019 at 4:32 pm #1203140189
Leonardo Dicaprio getting nominated over Robert Pattison would be such a letdown to me, though I’ve already accepted it’s happening
(If you said that sentence to me a decade ago I would’ve been shocked)
For Your Consideration:
Best Picture: ParasiteOctober 16, 2019 at 5:17 pm #1203140230
I’ve said it and I’ll say it again. Bohemian Rhapsody’s success at the Globes last year hurts Joker. If the HFPA start awarding the movie that made the most money every year they’ll lose all prestige.
depends from what pov you look at it. From award pundits and enthusiasts like us on goldderby the HFPA’s Bohemian Rhapsody fever did delegitimise the already fame-hungry show.
However, if you read it from HFPA’s position, Bohemian Rhapsody did win 4 Oscars so perhaps HFPA were not so off the ball.October 16, 2019 at 5:58 pm #1203140288
Isn’t pretty much what folks here at goldderby does all day everyday?October 16, 2019 at 6:10 pm #1203140315
Oh come on stop with this ‘joker is exceeding expectations’ bs.
Joker and Joaquin were always going to be the big names in contention. Comic Book movies have a huge following and Joker is one of the most beloved cbm characters to exist, it’s just fact.
Of course Joaquin was going to be a fan favourite, who else was? Jonathan Pryce playing a pope?? Antonio Banderas in a foreign language film??? COME ON
I’m not hating on Joaquin, imo his performance is the best of the year so far, but all this fakeness about Joker being an unexpected fan favourite when twitter is essentially a cbm moshpit and cbm popularity in general audiences is at an all time high is kinda annoying.
No one ever expected Joker to make $600 Million at the box office. Or to win the Golden Lion at Venice. Or to drop just 37% in its second weekend. Don’t act like all of its success was completely expected.

Whatever prestige they had left was destroyed the minute they gave a fucking Best Picture award to Rhapsody. Especially against four acclaimed movies eww
Yes, I think it shows they’re gonna do whatever the fuck they want, not vote for something because they want to look “prestigious”. They don’t care about that shit. And besides, Joker isn’t like Bohemian Rhapsody, a lot of people hate it, but an equal, if not higher number of people would consider it a prestige film.
